Transcript of Ireland

By: Kristen Cottrell and Maryah McKinney Ireland It was originally thought that the Irish people were Celtic. But after much genetic testing, they are most similar to Spanish and Portuguese people. It is believed after the last ice, about 15,000 B.C., the people from Spain and Portugal moved northward. As early as 8,000 B.C. Celtics also moved into this area and influenced the people. Where are they from? Costumes are from Celtic origin and are usually extremely ornate. Costumes They decorate the Christmas tree on the first day of Advent in the traditional pagan style. They keep it up until January 6th. If you take it down before then, you will have bad luck for the year. Customs Traditional instruments include the fidel, flute, pennywhistle, bag pipes, bombarde, free reed intruments, harp, mandaline, voice and bodhaan. Traditional Music Part of Irish folklore and mythology. They were said to have arrived before the Celts. They are small enough to fit on your shoulder, would play tricks on farmers and local villagers and were shoemakers. They would have pots of gold and would get together at night to have a Celli styled dance. Leprechauns They would only dance during celebrations. Traditional Dances The dresses are based off of traditional peasant dresses and hand embroidered with Celtic designs. Copies of the Tara Broach are worn on the shoulder to hold the shawl, which flows down the back. Men's costumes are either plain kilts or pants, a jacket and a brat. A brat is a folded cloak that hangs from the shoulder. Another custom is to bless people when you meet a new person. Spring cleaning is a custom that has taken place for hundreds of years in preparation for the local priest to bless their house. Men wore trousers that were loose at the top and tight fitting at the bottom. They wore a tunic on top that was tight at the elbow and flared out at the ends. They usually wore a cloak made of wool. The women wore a dress with a long bodice and long waist. It opened in the front to an attached wool skirt. It is unlucky to get married on a Saturday. Importance placed on melodies, harmonies are kept simple. Instruments usually played in unison following the lead player. Usually Roman Catholic Religion. Different types of dance are ceili, set dancing, riverdance. Recently they devided them into social and performance types, ceili and set being social and riverdance is performance. Ceili is performed in a line or circle. Hard and soft shoe can be worn depending on the type of dance. Step right then left and repeated twice is very common throughout Irish dancing and also proper placement of arms, upper body and feet. http://youtu.be/r-WNbnDRWnY http://www.irelandseye.com/aarticles/culture/music/dance/costume.shtm
