Transcript of 01.07 Geometry Debate

The Debate
Argument #1: There is a need for student to understand and be able to construct geometric figures using a compass and straightedge
or
Argument #2: There is no need for students to use a compass and straightedge, and ALL geometric constructions should be done using a drawing program.
Reason #2
When students use their hands to construct a geometric figure it is easier to understand the steps used to create the figures

Reason #3
When students have mastered how to create geometric figures using their mind and very few tools it is easy to apply geometry to the real world
Reason #4
We would still know geometry if technology went away
I argue that there is a need for students to understand and be able to construct geometric figures using a compass and straightedge.
Reason #1
Constructing figures with a compass and straightedge helps students understand the material better, instead of using a drawing program
01.07 Geometry Debate
Why the opposing method is not better
Reason #1
There is no intelligence used in a drawing program, all you need to know is how to use the software
Reason #2
There isn't a challenge because you only need to know the software
Reason #3
Not everybody has the technology to use a drawing program, but with a compass and straightedge you don't need that technology
