Transcript of Laser Printers

canner History Invented at Xerox research center in 1969
Using a xerographic process "Talks" to computer host through communication port.
Date is sent through language, PCL.
Transformed into vector form.
Converted into a bitmap image.
Raster Image Processor (RIP). Drum Laser Assembly Laser Printing Process
It cleans up any leftover residue(s) from the last printing job is cleaned off the drum to prepare the drum for printing a new page. The Cleaning Phase 1 2 Gary StarkWeather S

T aser utput erminal Model 3800, 1976. Capable of producing over 20,000 lines It is an aluminum barrel.
Attracts electrically charged toner.
Allows information to be pasted onto the paper permanently. Aimed at a mirror.
Directs the beam onto the drum.
The beam is bounced of by the mirror.
A pulse of light is emitted.
Also called "writing". Controller Static Electricity The principle at work.
Electrical charge built up on insulated objects.
Used as a kind of temporary glue.
Objects with opposite static electricity cling together. Fusing Rollers heat up to 200 C.
Two rollers used in this process.
Heat roller - hollow, radiant lamp, must be hot.
Pressure roller - applies pressure. Toner Colored Powder.
Visibly forms text/images.
Attracted to charged drum.
Also attracted to charged paper. Primary Corona Wire The second phase involves the Primary Corona Wire. Basically, the Corona Wire applies a uniform negative charge to the drum. 3 The laser writes an electrical representation on the drum of the image that will be printed. The Writing Phase 4 The Developing Phase During the developing phase, toner is applied electrically to the areas on the drum that were written by the laser. 5 The Transferring Phase The paper becomes part of the process. Now ,the transfer corona wire applies a positive charge to the paper that pulls the negative charged toner onto the paper. 6 The Fusing Phase Finally during the fusing phase, the heat and pressure rollers melt the toner particles into the paper. The printed paper will be temporarily warm as a result of the fusing phase. High quality text and graphics on plain paper.
Relatively light weight and compact.
Highly optimized.
Printing speed is high. Advantages & Known to be hazardous to the atmosphere and your health.
3x more expensive than a inkjet printer.
Affordable models only produce about 4 pages a minute.
Not yet capable of printing high-resolution images. Invented in 1976.
First presented in 1988 Laser The larger the image or text, the longer it can take to print.
Rely on multiple small cartridges of colored ink Inkjet Laser Laser Inkjet Smaller; save you valuable space.
Good for small offices.
Much cheaper.
Can accomplish common printing tasks at a reasonable level of quality. Inkjet Cartridges get clogged or dirty.
Cannot use all types of paper.
Ink may smear.
Cartridges often cost as much as $12-$60. 1 The software application you are using sends the data to be printed to the printer driver & translates the data into a language the printer can understand. 2 Once the printer receives the data from the computer, a certain amount is stored in a buffer. But, if the printer had not been used for a period of time, it will go through a short clean cycle. 3 The paper feed stepper motor is activated. This engages the rollers which feed paper from the paper tray into the printer. Here, a small trigger is depressed when there is paper in the tray. 4 Once the paper is fed, the print head stepper motor comes into place. It pauses for a mere fraction of a second each time that the print head sprays dots of ink. 5 Multiple dots are made at each stop. It sprays the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key-black) colors in precise amounts to make any other color imaginable. Inkjet Printing Process 6 Once the printing is complete, the print head is parked. The paper feed stepper motor spins the rollers to finish pushing the completed page into the output tray. Components Does not affect the laser printer's speed.
Image or a few lines of text can be printed at the same speed.
