8 ways to be smart
What makes someone smart?
What is real intelligence?
For many years...
We now know that those ways are very limited ways of measuring how smart someone is.
...intelligence had been measured in people at an intellectual level, by the grades they got in school or by I.Q. tests.
Howard Gardner
In 1983, Howard Gardner a Harvard University researcher questioned the idea that intelligence could be measured by I.Q. tests.

He came up with

in his book Frames of Mind.

Gardner’s theory was that: Every person has all eight types of intelligence, but most people are smarter in some ways than in others.
"The Theory of Multiple Intelligences"
The 8 different kinds of intelligence also known as the 8 kinds of smart, are these:
Word Smart
 Ability to use language powerfully
 Intelligence of language, books and stories
People with word smarts tend to read, write and speak well and they like books, stories and lively discussions.

They learn through reading, writing, listening, debating, and discussing.

Writers (such as Shakespeare), poets, public speakers, librarians, radio or TV announcers, journalists and lawyers.
Numbers Smart
VERBAL INTELLIGENCE
LOGICAL INTELLIGENCE
Ability to analyze problems, solve puzzles, find patterns and make connections between ideas
Intelligence of numbers, ordered sequences, step-by-step reasoning
Tend to be good at solving mathematical and scientific problems.
They like numbers, logical puzzles, computers, making predictions and brainteasers.
Charts, graphs, stats and scientific data help them learn.
Scientists (such as Albert Einstein), mathematicians, accountants, computer analysts, technicians.
Picture Smart
SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE
Able to interpret and create images. To look at an object and imagine how it would look if it were changed.
Intelligence of creating pictures, images and symbols, of moving things around in 3D space and predicting how objects move in relationship to each other.
People who are picture smart have a “good eye,” they can draw what they see.
Spatial intelligence allows them to draw, paint, sculpt, design and build.
They learn easily through diagrams, pictures, models and symbol.
Artists (Pablo Picasso), architects, engineers, photographers, sculptors, interior decorators, chess players or airplane pilots.
Body Smart
PHYSICAL INTELLIGENCE
Able to make their bodies do what they want them to do.

Intelligence of the physical self.
Use their bodies to express themselves and love to be active.

They are usually good at things that use strength or endurance, poise, grace or coordination.

They learn best by imitating and actually doing.

Athletes (Michael Jordan), dancers, actors, mechanics.
Sound Smart
Ability to hear, appreciate, mimic and create different types of music and rhythms.
MUSICAL INTELLIGENCE
They have a high sensitivity to sounds, tones, and music. They are able to follow a story or lecture without the need of visual aids.

Rhyming comes easily to them, as does singing, playing an instrument, and composing music.

Find it easier to learn when things are set to music or to a beat, or when information is presented through music/ with sound effects.

Composers, singers (such as Aretha Franklin, John Lennon), musicians, DJ (disk jockey).
 Intelligence of sound and rhythm.
People Smart
INTERPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE
Intelligence of understanding others.
Able to make others feel comfortable or uncomfortable, is good at motivating others, has strong communication skills and is able to create long meaningful relationships with people.
Enjoy socializing and working with others and are able to lead and be led.

Learn best when things are presented in the first person or in terms of how they affect human relationships.

Salesman, politicians, teachers, managers, nurses.
Self Smart
INTRAPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE
They have high self-esteem, self-confidence and are perfectionists. These people know themselves well and are in tune with their emotions, abilities and goals.
Intelligence of the self.
Like to spend time alone, thinking and meditating.

Learn well when they make connections between who they are and what they are learning.

Psychologists, therapists, counselors, entrepreneurs.
INTELLIGENCE AND School
We will learn in a variety of ways this year.

Sometimes we will have an activity that is not one of your learning styles. This is okay because we support all of our class members so everyone can learn.

It is important for me to know how you learn best so I can help you.
