Created in 1928
Walter Elais Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1901.
Walt Disney first created Mortimer Mouse
His wife told him to change his name to Mickey Mouse.
Steamboat Willie was his first cartoon with sound.
Walt Disney as a Young Boy
Walt Disney studied Art and Photography in high school.
When he was 16 he wanted to join the army but he was rejected because he was too young so he joined the Red Cross and went to France and he drove an ambulance.
Instead of camouflage he covered his ambulance with cartoons.
When Walt returned from France, he started a career in commercial art.
He started a small company called Laugh-O-Grams, that eventually went bankrupt.
With only $20 and a suitcase, he went to Hollywood to start a new life.
Walt Disney married his paint and ink artist, Lillian Bounds.
They had two daughters, Diane and Sharon
In 1932, Walt Disney made his first colour cartoon. It was called Flowers and Trees. This was his first Oscar award.
In 1937, Walt Disney made his first full-length animated film. It was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
In the next five years he made Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi.
Walt Disney made Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan started in the 30's, but they
were put on hold during the war years.
He also started working on Cinderella, which became Walt Disney's most successful film since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
In 1948 Warner Brothers created Bugs Bunny and Walt Disney Animation Studio was
not the country's most popular animation studio anymore.
Walt Disney himself, hosted a television show called The Wonderful World of Disney.
In 1958 the name changed to Walt Disney Presents and then to Wonderful World of Color in 1961
It played for 21 years.
Mickey Mouse Club
The Mickey Mouse Club was Walt Disney's second television show. It was on from 1955-1960.
It was a variety show with children who were called the Mouseketeers.
After visiting theme parks with his daughters in the 30's and 40's, Walt Disney had the idea to build his own theme park.
Disneyland was started in 1954 and opened the next year
on July 17, 1955 in Anaheim, California.
In 1965, Walt Disney began plans to build another theme park in central Florida.
Unfortunately, he died of lung Cancer on December 15, 1966.
Walt Disney's brother, Roy continued the project and construction began in 1967.
Walt Disney World took 5 years to complete.
It opened on October 1, 1971.
It is now the most visited attraction in the world, with 52 million visitors every year.
