Hello ladies and gentlemen, today I will be talking about the January birthstone, Garnet. As you may know, my birthday is on January 16 ! You might be familiar with the term Garnet but that will be all clear when I’m presenting. So stay tuned right after this slide!
Garnets have been known for thousands of years. Even Noah, it is reported, used a lantern from Garnet in order to safely steer his Ark through the darkness of the night. It is also known that the Garnet resembles purity, truth, faithfulness, and friendship. Furthermore, the Garnet also has healing properties that has been reputed to be effective for health problems relating to : Blood, heart, lungs, and infections.

• Fact 3- The symbolism associated with garnets is as follows:
The different chemicals that make up a Garnet are: Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminuim, Iron, Chromium, Manganese, and Titanium. These chemicals turn into one and settle. At this point, a Garnet has been made! The Garnet’s chemical formula is: A3B2Si3O12. This typical Garnet is 6.5-7.5 on the MOH scale of hardness (THAT’S PRETTY HARD!). A Garnet can be scratched by Topaz, Corundum, and Diamond. These minerals on the MOHs scale go up 8-10. Some of the characteristics that this wonderful Garnet has are luster, transparency, and color.
The largest and highest quality Garnet deposits are found in North America, Australia, East Africa and Asia (specifically India and Russia). Garnets have different characteristics depending on their natural region. For example, the star garnet has been mined in Idaho and India but is very rare anywhere else. Garnet deposits are primarily found in river beds and mountain regions of these countries. In the mining process, miners remove soil from the area, and then chip the Garnet out of the ground by hand or machinery. In this case, Garnets have no human right issues but they might in the future….
• Fact 1 - The origin of the name garnet is derived from the Greek word "granatum" meaning "pomegranate seed" which reflects the shape and color of the crystals
Garnets stand out and shines bright like you, maybe a Garnet has more in common than you thought in the beginning. I think the part I enjoyed the most was learning more about my birthstone. The most memorable/ important thing I’ve learned from this Prezi is learning that the word "granatum" meaning "pomegranate seed" reflects the shape and color of the Garnet. I hope you guys loved this Prezi and learned something more than you did before!
The Value of the Garnet
Red/brown Garnets are not unusual to find under the ground. Garnets are semi-precious because they can cost as little as $40 per carat. These Garnets are measured by carats and are worth more by the weight and size. Garnets are usually cut into Cabrochons, Cushion, Oval, and Round. Garnets are refined by the process of cutting because Garnets don’t come out of the ground ready to go. You would have to cut the gemstone to make it perfect! Another fact is that Garnets show the least amount of color darkness in the gemstone. Garnets are commonly used as abrasives, jewelry, and presents.
