So, The Highland Companies - an American Hedge Fund bought more land in the Escarpment to build Canada's largest quarry.

designation gives an area international recognition for the important
ecological
and
cultural
values in an area.

1990 Niagara Escarpment Designated as a Biosphere Reserve
WHY?
725 km. limestone cliff!
Several rivers rise/meet in the Escarpment which supports Ontario's drinking water.
Home to 300 bird species, 53 mammals, 36 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish and lots of flora!
Encompasses a rich mosaic of farms, wetlands, waterfalls, cliffs, streams, mineral resources, historic villages, wildlife habitats, and cities.
Includes Canada's best agricultural land.
Includes Ontario's best hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, boating including the Bruce Trail!
Recreational activities in the Escarpment contribute more than $100 million to Ontario's economy.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Niagara's recognition as a Biosphere Reserve is in the company of other Reserves such as The Galapagos Islands, Africa's Serengeti Desert, and the Florida Everglades!
So...how does this affect ME?
In Ontario? In Brampton?
We mobilized a lot of people. We had people come to the country and experience the land. This farmland grows food for the city. … For me it was a nice strategy.
