Getting started

Pixel dimensions

image size - length x width

resolution

pixels per inch (ppi)

combination of pixel dimensions at particular resolution

dictates "document size"

optimal screen resolution:

72 ppi

not necssary to give image pixel dimensions > 1000 ppi

at largest dimension

example: Daily Post all photos are 648 x 486 pixels at 72 dpi

which gives a 9" x 6.75 document size optimized for screen viewing

but not for printing. I achieve this by resampling the original image

and downsizing it; I then resave it under another file name in another folder.

optimal print resolution

300 ppi at whatever print size you wish

this will be limited to capture (by scan or camera)

for example: my camera is a 5MP capture. When it captures at its

resolution (2560 x 1920) I get a 35.556" x 26.667" at 72ppi image.

When resized (not resampled) to 300ppi I get an 8.5" x 6.4" image

that will print well.
