Made By: Lasondra D. Copeland Karl Landsteiner Karl Landsteiner was born on June 14th, 1868 as a single child to a famous viennese journalist and Fanny Hess Landsteiner. The Family lived in Baden bei wien, a more upper middle class suburb of vienna. At the age of 6, in 1874, Karl's father suffered a massive heart attack and died. Karl had to be placed under the guardianship of a family friend but stayed close to his mother. A little bit about Landsteiner At the age of 17, in 1885, Karl Landsteiner he had passed the entrance exam for medical school at the University of Vienna, where he had expressed much excitement in chemistry. He took a year to service the military at the age of 20 and when he came back; he graduated from medical school at the age of 23. After graduating he began advanced studies in organic chemistry under the mentor Ernest Ludwig. How Did He Start Out? For the next 10 years of Landsteiner's life he worked a number of laboratories all over Europe. He studied and worked with the most famous scientists of that time. People like Emil Fisher, Eugen von Banberger, Arthur Hantesch and Roland Scholl. Places from Wurzburg to Munich. He (Landsteiner) published many journal articles with these men.
With the nature of the antibodies(what he also studied) began to interest him. As he was serving as an assistant to the scientist max von Gruberin the department of Hygiene at the University of Vienna from 1896-1897. During that time Landsteiner published his first article on the subject of bacteriology and seriology (the study of blood) and this subject occupied him his entire career. The Start of His Career and the Road to Nobel Prize Well with this discover of the different blood types made safe transfusion of blood possible from one person to another. The first successful transfusions were achieved in 1907 by Dr. Reuben Ottenberg of Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York. During World War 1 transfusions of compatible blood was first performed on a large scale and it saved many lives. Operations of the heart, lungs and circulatory system was previously unable to be practiced because of a lot of blood loss involved, but now with Landsteiner's discovery we are able to practice. Why Care of His Discover? Landsteiner although hired to perform autopsies in the Vienna Institute of pathology in 1897. He cont. to study immunology and the mysteries of blood around his time. He discovered the agglutination (its the clumping of bacteria or red cells when held together by antibodies) that it occurs in one person's blood is brought in contact with another. In 1901 Landsteiner demonstrated that a blood serum of some people can clump another person's blood. From his demonstration and observations from the experiment he devised the idea of mutually incompatible blood groups. He places the blood types into 3 groups. A, B, C (which later became O). Also a 4th groups called AB developed with the help of his colleagues. The Discovery of the 4 Blood Types. The Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine was awarded to Karl Otto Landsteiner in 1930 for discovery of the human blood groups.
