Elizabethan Cosmology The Great Chain of Being What is The Great Chain of Being? Definition: It's major premise was that every existing thing in the universe had it's "place" in a divinely planned hierarchical order, which was pictured as a chain vertically extended. hi·er·ar·chi·cal - Of the nature of a hierarchy; arranged in order of rank. - everything had it's own place - spiritual items at the top of the chain - items of pure existence at the bottom Where did this idea originate? - Aristotle the greek philosopher - biological classification Scala Naturae - "ladder or stairway of nature" - Down the Chain God - reason and compassion - spiritual being - influential - has the most authority Angelic Beings - also spiritual beings - lack of infinite knowledge - little authority Humans - - spiritual beings bound to bodies - intellectual sin & physical sin - taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell - ranked below angelic beings Animals - they have senses - limited intelligence - primal mindset
