Sabbath Rest and Delight 2010
Transcript of Sabbath Rest and Delight 2010
Then Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people and not people to meet he requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath.
Jesus and the Sabbath
Queen of Days
and on the 7th day God finished his work of creation, so He rested from all his work.
Set Apart for special purpose
Not used for other things
What are some holy things in the Bible?
How did they get to be holy?
What are some of the things that God made?
What did he say about each thing that he made?
Then God looked over all that he had made, and he saw that it was very good!" Gen 1:31
Question: What is the first thing that God declared "holy" in the Bible?
Gen 2:2. On the seventh day, having finished his task, God rested from all his work. 3. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from his work of creation.
The groom dresses up, rejoices. No mundane tasks, does not work on a wedding day. No mourning.
Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don't pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the Lord's holy day. Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don't follow your own desires or talk idly.
Then the Lord will be your delight. I will give you great honor and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob. Isaiah 58:13,14.
“Call Sabbath a delight to the soul and body. Sanctify it by choice meals, by beautiful garments. Delight your soul with pleasure.“
With Friends and Family
As if a queen were coming for a day.
Plan - be intentional.
•Praise, not petitions
•No mourning, fasting, grief
If there is no Sabbath- no regular and commanded not-working, not-talking — we soon become totally absorbed in what we are doing and saying, and God’s work is either forgotten or marginalized. When we work we are most god-like, which means that it is in our work that it is easier to develop god-pretensions. Un-sabbathed, our work becomes the entire context in which we define our lives. We lose God-consciousness, God-awareness, sightings of resurrection. We lose the capacity to sing “this is my fathers world” and end up chirping little self-centred ditties about what we are doing and feeling.

Sabbath as a "a day off is a 'bastard sabbath'. Days off are not without benefits to be sure, but Sabbaths they are not. However beneficial, a day off is a secularized sabbath. A day off is at the service of six working days. The purpose is to restore strength, increase motivation, reward effort, and keep performance high." It might improve family relations and mental health. But it is just a mini-vacation and is not about faith. "It is utilitarian. But this is not biblical sabbath keeping." Eugene Peterson
Just a day off
Sabbath is not for the purpose of recovering lost strength and becoming fit for forthcoming labor. It is a day for the sake of life. Not an interlude but the climax of living.” (Rabbi Heschel)
Sabbath is the time to receive silence and let it deepen into gratitude, to receive quiet into which forgotten faces and voices unobtrusively make themselves present, to receive the days of the just completed week and absorb the wonder and miracle still reverberating from each one, to receive our Lord’s amazing grace. Eugene Peterson
Part of each Sabbath in Silence
One Sabbath each quarter entirely silent!
Was he weary?
What did he finish on the 7th day?
Created 'Rest' -
Menhua: Rest Joyous Repose, Tranquility, Delight
Not a negative concept – not simply “absence of toil.”
Ps 23. Lead me beside still waters (heb: Menua)
1st Task (Days 1-6)
Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals. . . (Gen 1:28)
2nd Task (7th day)
Keep the Sabbath day Holy
Toil (with the Fall)
Other Religions Sanctify Places
Jews: "The Sabbaths are our greatest cathedrals.”
Shrines, Temples, holy cities
Modern Man: dominate physical world through technology
“On the Sabbath, we especially care for the seed of eternity planted in our soul.” In 6 days, we dominate the world, on the 7th we seek to dominate ourself. (Heschel)
Practicing for Eternity, A window into eternity
"Six days shalt thou labor and do all your work.” Ex. 20:9 (4th Commandment)
The more an animal needs to learn in order to survive, the more it needs to play."
God did not need to create the world. For his pleasure
Play redistributes power and surprises us. It shows us that our demand for mastery is an illusion. (Allender)
Unconsciously process our wider world
No Mundane Activities
Time is scarce commodity. Vocab: "Need, waste, save, budget, steal, use time but we do not control it. It is something we are running after.
We are called to submit to time as the medium in which we exist.
It is to be honored and enjoyed. And all views of time that fail to do so are doomed to never receiving the Sabbath. (Allender)
Accept it as a gift
Rituals and reminders
Ask God what he wants to show you that day. Be expectant
Music that leads you into God's presence
Verbal Blessing to those in your household
Sabbath should be "a feast day that remembers our leisure in Eden and anticipates our play in the new heavens." (Allender)
Look forward to on days 4,5, 6.
Savor on Days 1, 2, 3.
Enjoy God's Creation
What part of Creation will you love this Sabbath?
What God did on the first Sabbath: Delight in his creation.
Can we really finish it all in six days? It will ALWAYS be incomplete. Rest on the Sabbath as if all your work was done. Rest even from the thought of labor.
Cleaning, Laundry, Shopping
The Sabbath is a covernant sign (like Passover, Circumcision, David's kingship, Noah's Rainbow). "Given to you so that you may know the I am the LORD."
BUT breaking sabbath punishable by DEATH.
The pharisees did not KNOW Jesus. It's all about HIM - worshipping the Lord of the Sabbath. Without him, it becomes a drudgery.
Afraid of Silence
Why wouldn't I want to take a day to delight in God's goodness?
Dan Allender, p. 124
