Four types of Procedures
Peer nominated procedure- students nominate other students according to their preference (Which classmate do they like working in a group with)
Peer rating procedure- Students rank each member depending on the questions (scale 1-5)
Sociometric ranking procedure- Instead of using students, adults rank the students' social relationships.
Alternative method procedure- pictures, guess who, and class play Reliability/ Validity of Data Age Range Depending on the age range of the students, the sociogram assessment should be set up in a way to fit each childs' ability level.
An alternative to set up the questions for a younger audience (pre-school to second grade) is to have students point to pictures.
When younger students (3-5) are taking the assessment, teachers should set up the questions from a scale 1-5.
Another way to set up the assessment is to play the "Guess Who Game" which older students can answer the questions who they believe best fit the category.
Class play is another way to set up the assessment. Students role play to which students will best fit the scenarios. Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths:
Teachers are able to use this assessment as a screening tool that can be used in developing an IEP.
Teachers are able to identify children who may have a social behavioral problems or are at risk.
Sociometric measures are simple to use and
can be easily utilized to better grasp social status within classrooms.
=Social Assessments can change over time.
Sociogram Assessments focus on one area: social skills.
Any hidden prejudices or stereotypes within the person administering the assessment that can influence judgment.
Sociograms are not reliable under 2nd grade because younger students have more transient friendships than older students. The sociogram was created by Jacob Levi Moreno in 1933.
Some of the data may be considered biased.
Students are singling out students and are focusing on their negatives.
Teacher needs to find the assessment most suitable for the classroom.
