Book Project(1) Plot summary Of Sound Mind is the story of teenage Theo and his rather atypical family. Both of Theo's parents, Thomas and Palma, and his younger brother, Jeremy, are deaf. Being the only hearing person in his family, Theo has to face the challenge of having to always be the interpreter. Then Theo meets Ivy, the new girl at school. Ivy, like Theo, has a deaf parent and can relate to all that he goes through. Though when tragedy strikes Theo's family, things get even tougher for him at home. With the help of Ivy and others he meets along the way, Theo is able to work out his family troubles, and discovers how to be his self. Setting Of Sound Mind is set in a small college town in Philadelphia. Most of the story follows Theo as a high school student and his family. Themes Major theme: Disability The major theme in this novel is disability. However, not just physical disability, but mental struggles. Theo has struggled with his feelings due to the heavy burdens put on him from being the only hearing person of his family. Minor theme: Going After Your Passion Another theme prevalent in this story is about finding your passion. Theo's dream is to study math at MIT college, and Ivy is passionate about cooking. In the end of the story both Theo and Ivy journey to turn their dreams into a reality About the Author Jean Ferris was born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1939. She is an American writer of young adult books. She has a B.A. and an M.A in speech pathology and audiology from Stanford University. She now lives in San Diego, California with her husband who is a lawyer. Conclusion Ultimately, Of Sound Mind was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone. This heart felt novel has something for every reader; success, tragedy, love, humor, and much more. You understand each character as if you know them personally. Jean Ferris captures the lives of Theo and his family so well, by the end of the book I thought I actually knew sign language. You'll never want to put it down. Symbol An important symbol from Of Sound Mind was a hand. Everyone in Theo's family "spoke" sign language. It was how they communitcated and without they're hands, their means of communication would be taken away.
As you learn later in the story, Theo's father, Thomas, suffers a stroke and becomes physically disabled. He is unable to work as a carpenter and stuggles gaining back ability in his hands. So not only did Thomas lose much of his ability to communicate, but also his way of life Where You Can Get It You can purchase Of Sound Mind from your closest book store, library, or Amazon.com Works cited: Ferris, Jean.
