Shawshank Redemption Themes
Transcript of Shawshank Redemption Themes
Two themes to the story:Friendship and hope/freedom
Friendship:displayed through Red and Andy and how they get along
Freedom/hope:displayed through Andy's actions in prison
Throughout the film Andy and red do things for each other that reinforce the theme of friendship
Focuses on Andy and Reds friendship, in prison friendship is an extremely important thing
Strong relationship=overcome prison challenges
Examples of friendship
Tarring the roof: Andy risks his life to get the guys some beers
Another scene=Andy vows to bring funding into the prison for a library
Strong example of friendship= Andy makes Tommy Williams take exams so he has an education
Important theme in the story is hope, it is what Andy uses to make prison life bearable
Andy says that without hope there's no point in living through prison
Music is incorporated a lot with hope as it gives the characters a sense of freedom and Andy says it is the only thing that keeps him going
Examples of hope/freedom

Andy singing in the pit
Andy repeatedly taking beating from the sisters
"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies"
Film ends on a high note of the two themes
