Research some of the ailments ghetto dwellers may have experienced due to severe malnutrition:
Ghetto life was wretched. The ghettos were filthy, with poor sanitation. Extreme overcrowding forced many people to share a room. Disease was rampant. Staying warm was difficult during bitter cold winters without adequate warm clothes and heating fuel. Food was in such short supply that many slowly starved to death. Typhus, a common contagious disease in the camps and ghettos was seen as a way of getting rid of large numbers of Jews, and while the disease spread randomly, the failure to treat it, the exacerbation of it and even the causing of it facilitated "Endlosung" or the final solution. Hunger and Malnutrition were two constant companions in the ghetto. There was very simply not enough food. This has been dealt with elsewhere. The effects of starving to death were even studied by the Nazis at Auschwitz and other camps. Starvation begins with hunger and even pain from hunger and over a length of time proceeds into the body's system 'shutting down,’ there is a point at which hunger is not experienced as hunger, and faintness from hypoglycemia impairs cognition. Starvation processes also lower the immune system's ability to fight off disease.
The daily requirement of calories and fat for a 14 year old girl is at least 2000 good calories a day would keep you healthy and burning fat. You can’t determine how many calories each and every single teenage girl/boy should be taking in because were are all different sizes, but they should all be around the same which is 2,000 because we are still growing. I meet these requirements about right, not everyday I eat enough to get to 2000 calories, and some days I would eat a little more than it. The important thing is, is to have a good healthy balanced diet. When I was keeping track of my food diary, I realized that all my calories at the end of the day came to about 1,000 calories, so it was a little under what I should be eating.
Compare average daily ration of ghettos dwellers with USDA recommended daily allowances for adults and children:
-The amount of calories at times were no more than 1,100 calories a day. Often that food wasn’t even available. At the rate of food they were eating, it came out to be 350 calories a day. That number of calories a day was less than half of the calories needed in one day to stay healthy, which is 2,000 calories.
Starvation in the Ghettos
The official weekly ration for the Jews was very small. At times, it was no more than 1,100 calories a day. Often, not even that much food was made available. For one particular week each Jew was allowed: Bread 14.0 oz, Meat products 4.5 oz, Sugar 1.75 oz, Fat 0.9 oz. At that rate, the Jewish ration was only about 350 calories a day. With much less than those amounts, the body loses weight quickly. After a certain point, the body survives by digesting muscle. Painful death from starvation comes not long after that.
The cognitive and psychological processes that led to acts of desperation such as cannibalism as well as the specifically psychological effects of starvation, including depression, anxiety, apathy or loss of motivation, and feelings of lessening self-worth. Starvation causes excessive weight loss, malnutrition, and a decrease in pulse and temperature. The condition caused fatigue, decreased muscle mass, and increased chance of disease due to a decaying immune system. Starvation is also linked to other diseases, including amenorrhea, or a loss of menstruation in females, typhus, and dysentery.
