How does culture influence literature and how does literature influence culture?
Animal Farm
The Russian Revolution consisted of a number of individuals with distinct personalities in an event that changed history. Animal Farm imitated the events of the Russian Revolution by substituting a conflict within a country with a conflict within a farm. The main dictators and superior roles of the Russian Revolution were brought out in different types of animals.
Literature Influencing Culture
Literature is a big part of all cultures. Different countries study books that shape their nations and children and adults will read them so that they understand what made their home how it is. Literature can inform people, it can share history and it becomes the history of a certain place or the world. The documentation of an event or even a story made up can change a culture.
Culture Influencing Literature
Lord of the Flies
The Lord of The Flies affected Golding's focus on the true nature of man. He plotted his novel on the idea that a human's character can be completely altered when it is not constricted by the bounds of society. This affected our culture nowadays because it triggered this thought into people's heads to wonder: How would an individual act if the expected behavior from society was out of the question? This became a major focus in popular creation such as
The Hunger Games
and movies like
The Purge
Animal Farm Project
Old Major-Karl Marx
Mr. Jones-Czar Nicholas II
Boxer-dedicated people of Russia
Molly-vain/selfish people of Russia
Old Ben-skeptical people of Russia
Culture appears in all fiction books. With every setting comes a societal influence. The things around and occurring during the period of book writing impacts the story in the way people act, speak and practice every day events.
The Joy Luck Club
The culture of China affected the creation of "The Joy Luck Club" through its strict chinese tradition. Amy Tan was so intrigued at the harsh ways and rules in the traditions that she began to question why chinese parents still pushed it on their child that continued to make the individual's childhood miserable. This interest led her to create a novel solely based on the Chinese mother-daughter relationship and the importance that the culture and traditions had on it.
