A brief history Alcatraz Island Became a part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area United States Army thought that Alcatraz had a strategic placement as a military fortification. Seventy two years later - 1847 AS FEDERAL PRISON - 1934 to 1963 The cost of each inmate per day was Closed on March 21, 1963 due to Federal Budget Cuts 1972 but opened to public in 1973 around fall time.
