NUCLEIC ACID
made of repeating monomers called
NUCLEOTIDES
There are 3 parts to the DNA nucleotide:
phosphate
, deoxyribose
sugar
, and nitrogen
base
4 Nitrogen Bases:
Adenine (A)
Guanine (G)
Thymine (T)
Cytosine (C)
Structure of DNA:
DNA is made of TWO strands of nucleotides.
DNA's shape is called a
DOUBLE HELIX.
Base pair rule:
Adenine
binds with
Thymine
Cytosine
binds with
Guanine
A-T C-G
Bases are held together with hydrogen bonds
Location and Function of DNA:
DNA is located in the NUCLEUS of eukaryotic cells.
DNA is GENETIC INFORMATION that controls the
production or synthesis of PROTEINS.
DNA Replication:
DNA replicates BEFORE A CELL DIVIDES.
The goal of replication is to create an
IDENTICAL COPY

of the DNA molecule.
Steps of DNA Replication Process
1. Double helix
UNZIPS
and hydrogen bonds are broken.
2. Complementary
nitrogen bases
in the nucleus
bond
to un-zipped strands.
3.
Two new DNA
molecules are produced.
SEMI-CONSERVATIVE: each DNA molecule produced after replication has
one strand from the old molecule
and
one new strand.
Chromosomes
are found inside the
nucleus
.

.
