Versions of minecraft
There are several different versions of Minecraft, the original desktop version, two pocket editions; a free demo versions with less items and a version where you have to pay money but you get the whole game, with some exeptions (because of hardware limitations), and the X-box 360 edition which is similar to the desktop, except an earlier update of Minecraft.
There are several ways to change the way Minecraft works or looks, the most common ways to change these are resource packs and mods. Some mods I recommend are the Tekkit modpack, and Better than Wolves.
What Minecraft Teaches you
Minecraft teaches you several things, Building and Creativity, Physics, and how to work together. The ways Minecraft Teaches you how to be creative is by allowing you to build your own stuff. Minecraft also teaches Physics by accurately having the mobs in-game (including sand gravel and anvils) fall down at the same rate if you were to fall in real life. However, some blocks do not fall and can float in midair.
In conclusion, Minecraft is a fun and educational game that can help you learn several things, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it.

The Goals of Minecraft are varied, ranging from extremely simple to rage inducing. One of these many varied goals is to mine different materials and then craft them into many different and amazing things, from a simple house to a giant factory to make jaffas.
