discrimination ? Up until 1967, homosexuality was considered to be a criminal offence.
The Sexual Offences Act of 1967 slightly changed this in that it decriminalised homosexual acts in private between two men who were 21 years of age or more. The Act applied only to England and Wales and not the Merchant Navy or the Armed Forces.
1970 - First gay demonstration in the UK took place in Highbury Fields in Islington.
1971 - First gay march through London in protest of the age restriction.
1974 – First national lesbian conference in Canterbury.
1984- Chris Smith, MP for Islington South in London, first MP to come out as gay while in office.
