Define environmental sustainability

Environmental sustainability involves making decisions and taking action that are in the interests of protecting the natural world, with particular emphasis on preserving the capability of the environment to support human life. It is an important topic at the present time, as people are realizing the full impact that businesses and individuals can have on the environment

The botanical name for Radiata Pine.

Pinus Radiata

Define ethical use of timber

Plantation forestry is the future for the world timber production. It is way more lucrative and cost efficient than exploiting natural forests in a sustainable way.

Explain steps taken to harvest Radiata Pine in an environmentally sustainable way

Radiata Pine has been chosen as a plantation species because it is easily raised and planted. It provides larger yields of usable timber in a shorter time than many native species. It seeds readily and, in exposed sunny positions, a seed may still fall and sprout a year or two after ripening. Radiata Pine is generally harvested at about 35 years. Which is a short time compared to most trees.

Explain why Radiata Pine would be chosen as a timber over Huon Pine

Radiata pine is a plantation softwood timber grown widely throughout Australia. The timber is low in density and fairly soft. The grain is usually straight, but knots are common whereas Huon pine is a species endemic to Tasmania Huon is a softwood Its durability and workability make it one of the best boat-building timbers known so we are using Radiata because we are not building boats we are making wind chimes.

The global distribution of Radiata Pine.

Today there are about 4 million hectares of planted radiata pine world wide, the largest plantations in Chile and New Zealand (about 1.5 million hectares each) and Australia (0.77 million hectares).

The Australian distribution of Radiata Pine.

The majority of Radiata Pine plantations occur in New South Wales and Victoria with plantation occurring in Western Australia, Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory (DPI 2006; Williams & Wardle 2007).

The growth rate and size potential of Radiata Pine.

Radiata Pine is a medium-sized tree that reaches heights of 40–50m, with a diameter of about 1 metre. In plantations, trees have straight trunks with a shallow crown. Radiata Pine is a fast growing tree. The annual growth rate in plantations averages 18m3 per hectare per year

The climate requirements for Radiata Pine.

Wet with leaves on the ground warm temperate climate, fertile soils and good annual rainfall are just some of the climate requirements for radiata pine.

The characteristics, features and uses of Radiata Pine.

The uses of radiata pine are,

Engineering: Preservative impregnated poles for pole frame construction, transmission poles and land poles .

Construction: General purpose softwood used as dressed, seasoned timber in general house framing, flooring, lining, joinery, mouldings and laminated beams. Preservative impregnated in sawn or round form in fencing, pergolas, landscaping, retaining walls, playground equipment. Also used in the manufacture of Scrimber .

Decorative: Furniture, outdoor furnishings (preservative impregnated), plywood, joinery, turnery, carving. Others. Structural plywood, scaffold planks, wood wool, paper products, particleboard, and medium density fibreboard.

Focus Question :
Why is Radiata Pine a preferred option to other species of timber?

Radiata pine is a versatile timber widely used for the full range of structural and decorative uses including framing, lining, glue laminated beams, veneer & plywood.

The timber is fairly soft, often with very wide annual growth rings. The wood is light brown to yellow, the sapwood white to pale yellow, but often confused.

The grain is usually straight, but knots are common. Radiata pine is very easy to work with standard tools.

Its open grain structure readily accepts preservative treatment, which can provide protection to hazard level 6 (the highest level).
