FULL SCRIPT

Hey everyone, so today I will be talking about my plan to create a Porn Utopia. A world where all porn is created ethically, where the industry is fair, respectful and equal, where the viewer’s gain enjoyment without gaining a negative mindset. I have create a code of conduct that aims for these qualities which we will look at a little later.
Firstly, I need to point out that while this presentation mostly uses the women in porn for case studies and examples, that is mostly because is just more information. Also, this talk obviously comes with a trigger warning.
THIS PRESENTATION WILL CONTAIN: COARSE LANGUAGE, SEXIST AND HOMOPHOBIC SLURS, DESCRIPTIONS OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY, DESCRIPTIONS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE, AND PORNOGRAPHIC IMAGES.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LEAVE AND TAKE A BREAK ANYTIME DURING THIS PRESENTATION.
So, I choose to do this topic because “sex is becoming more visible in contemporary Western cultures”. Because porn is everywhere and “much more accessible than before”. With the internet, porn is simply a mouse click away: 4% of all websites are pornographic and 14% of all internet searches are for pornographic material (Ward, 2013). And you can access it on any Wi-Fi-enabled device.
At this point I should clarify the definition of pornography. The word “porn” is thrown around as like awesome photos to look it. This is not porn. This is puppies and it is adorable.
Pornography is visual material, stories, photographs, GIFs or videos, which describe or depict sexual activity and/or sexual organs in a way which intends to stimulate sexual excitement.
Just so you know I will be focusing on filmed pornography and, because the internet has enabled as to, I will be discussing pornography from a largely global perspective.
So you may be thinking – if we have all this porn aren’t we already in a utopia.
No, not yet. Bad things have absolutely happened in the porn industry. Coercion and blackmail are just some of issues. Unfortunately, it all comes out in retrospect, as often individuals are not in a situation to speak up about it. This brings me to the 70’s classic, Deep Throat which was highly important for several reasons. Linda Lovelace was a former porn star and later an anti-porn crusader. Her husband at the time, Chuck Traynor, introduced to drugs, abused her, both physically and mentally, gang-raped her and forced her into prostitution and pornography. In her words she was a prisoner, never let out of Traynor’s sight, as he would often keep a gun pointed at her during the filming. She fled her husband by literally running away and later began campaigning against porn and for feminism.
Sadly, Linda’s story is not the only one. There is of course depression, deaths, STD’s and the drug culture that surrounds the industry. If you want to see more, this is link for a video discussing and showcasing abuse in porn industry. It has really footage and it really hard to watch, so that’s a warning if you choose to watch it.
So that is horrific and depressing. But is there a positive? Yes.
A recent study has disproven the “damaged goods hypothesis” – that is that all women in pornography are drug addicts with depression and self-hate.
“In terms of psychological characteristics, porn actresses had higher levels of self-esteem, positive feelings, social support, sexual satisfaction, and spirituality compared to [other women].” In addition to this, the previous belief that porn stars have a higher incident of sexual abuse is false.
So the bad side, is not representative of the entire industry, it is a part of it but we can change that.
What we need is ethical porn. Ethical porn is pornography that is not discriminatory, is diverse and is created ethically with the performers. Kitty Stryker, one of the main proposers of ethical porn states that “is a spectrum of behaviour that treats performers as workers and as humans, both on set and within the marketing”. Please note that ethical porn has nothing to do with the genre of porn at all, it is all about how it is created. In fact Kink.com is one of the noted ethical porn producers, specialising in fetish and BSDM. The photo is not from their website because their images were too graphic for class, to the left is an extremely comprehensive participant’s rights form. I believe it is the for Public Disgrace porn.
Anyway, you will see with that ethical porn and consumer awareness, porn often deemed corruptive or degrading actually is completely fine. What is not fine is the current state of the porn industry.
One of the major issues at the moment within the industry is lack of regulation. I honestly thought that there was laws or rules or best practice guides about the actual production of porn but all I can find is legislation regarding censorship. What can and cannot be shown. And this varies greatly from country to country. For example, rape porn is banned in lots of places and Australia bans porn with women with A cup breasts.
I personally believe that the lack of any sort of international or even national Code of Conduct is the reason that there are so many issues within the industry. It creates a “behind closed door” atmosphere that ignores many workers rights. So, what I have done is gather the research on ethical pornography and I have created a Code of Conduct. I am not saying its perfect, I have definitely left something out, but it is a step in the right direction.
This is my Code of Conduct as an infographic with voice over, so neither you nor I have to read it.

This is just the first step. Because even if all porn was created ethically, there is still a larger problem. The internet.
On the internet porn is cut up, mixed together and given new meanings. People are creating their own or stealing porn from other places. This raises an issue because we have now lost the notion of consent and ethics that the creator gave the film. We have the death of the author.
In addition to this, porn, just like everything else, has its side-effects. It is most comparable to alcohol.
Although it can be a positive aspect of life without anti-social behaviour. However, for some people who do have several other risk factors, it can add fuel to the fire.
## In addition to this pornography has been linked to unrealistic attitudes about sex, beliefs that women are sex objects and less progressive gender role attitudes.
It may just effect some more than others. But like anything being aware of what you are consuming will have its benefits. Which brings me to my final point.
Ethical porn starts with you, the consumer. You have responsibilities.

So finally, thank you. If you want to know more or want to find some ethical porn then search for these.
Final quick note, it is up to you. As the consumer you have the ability to change the industry. The industry makes a massive amount of money they won’t change unless we do.
Thank you.
