Lessons from a Mennonite's journey to training the military in peace
Global livestock industry produces more greenhouse gas emissions than transport

Assembly-line meat factories consume enormous amounts of energy, pollute water supplies, generate significant greenhouse gases and require ever-increasing amounts of corn, soy and other grains, a dependency that has led to the destruction of vast swaths of the world’s tropical rain forests.

It take 100 times more water (up to 2,500 gallons) to produce a pound of grain-fed beef than it does to produce a pound of wheat

Legal Protection

Development programs can help make communities more “resilient” to climate shocks to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Sustainable Development

Conflict Prevention

Water management initiatives in the Middle East and across Africa, Asia and Latin America foster collaboration across the lines of conflict.

Environmental Diplomacy

Every peacebuilding program should be “climate sensitive”

Explore ways of fostering understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment

Peacebuilding & Natural Resource Management

A severe drought, worsened by a warming climate, drove Syrian farmers to abandon their crops and flock to cities, helping trigger a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people

Varying Rainfall

Climate change is making wet places wetter and dry places drier

In China, the Gobi Desert is expanding at the rate of 4000 square miles per year

The Sahara Desert is spreading 3-12 miles per year, shrinking agricultural land

Mass Migrations
of people in search of new homes and livelihoods

Increase pressure between groups to get access to food and water

German Advisory Council on Global Change  WBGU (2007): Climate Change as a Security Risk;

Obama: 'No Challenge Poses a Greater Threat to Future Generations Than Climate Change'

US Admiral T. Joseph Lopez:

“Climate change will provide the conditions that will extend the war on terror.”

State Instability and Terrorism
increase as “fragile states” are incapable of responding to climate crises

Climate Change News Stories

While rich countries have historically been the chief consumers and polluters driving climate change, poor countries will suffer the worst consequences of it. Poor countries are at most risk from sea-level rise, increased droughts, floods and extreme weather. Some African and Latin American leaders call climate change “an act of aggression by the rich against the poor” and blame industrial countries’and corporations unwillingness to limit their carbon emissions for looming environmental disasters in their countries.
