Paragraph Writing
Putting it together
HAPPY WRITING!!!
There are many activities people can do during the summer in Ottawa. One thing people can do is bike ride or rollerblade along the Ottawa River. Taking a boat tour is another activity individuals can enjoy. Each tour is about one hour long and shows people the beautiful scenery of the capital city. Finally, there are several festivals that people can attend, including the RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest, the Festival franco-ontarien, and the Tim Horton's Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. Clearly, living in Ottawa during the summer time can be enjoyable with all the activities that are available.
The first sentence of any paragraph should ALWAYS introduce the subject. It should be specific and clear enough for your reader to understand what the paragraph will be about. This is known as the
topic sentence
.
The body of your paragraph includes several sentences that SUPPORT or EXPLAIN the topic sentence in more detail. They could be facts or examples. For shorter paragraphs, you may have 5-7 supporting sentences.
The final sentence of your paragraph restates your topic sentence using DIFFERENT words. It also reinforces your opinion and the points that you made in the body of the paragraph.
The Beginning - Topic Sentence
The Middle - Supporting Sentences
The End - Concluding Sentence
Introduction to Paragraph Writing
Before You Begin
Each sentence should contain a subject and a verb. If it doesn't, it's NOT a sentence. Ex. Frank ate some cookies.
Frank = subject, ate = verb
Make sure you understand the topic you have been assigned. On a piece of paper, write down any ideas you have about the topic. This is known as a
brainstorm
.
