Transcript of Roades, T--Hunting Hat/Isolation For Protection--Period 4

"It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks...very corny, I'll admit"
(Salinger 17-18)
As it is first introduced, Holden admits the hat is corny, or a little unusual
"I couldn't find my goddam hunting hat. Finally I found it...I put it on, and turned the old peak around to the back, the way I liked it"
(Salinger 45)
Again, Holden uses the hat, and the unique way he wears it, as protection in a time of insecurity
"I took my red hunting hat out of my pocket and put it on. I didn't give a damn how I looked"
(Salinger 88)
Holden realizes he looks strange and unusual in the hat, but still wears it because he feels comfortable being isolated from others
"I took my old hunting hat out of my pocket...I knew I wouldn't meet anybody that knew me"
(Salinger 122)
Holden lacks the self-confidence to be seen by acquaintances while wearing the hat
The Red Hunting Hat And The Theme Of Isolation For Protection
"Then what she did-it damn near killed me-she reached in my coat pocket and took out my red hunting hat and put it on my head"
(Salinger 212)
Phoebe is accepting Holden as his true self, despite his attempts at isolation
This moment represents the important connection between Holden and Phoebe
Overall Analysis
Holden realizes that the hat is "corny" and "crazy," and it sets him apart from his peers, not necessarily in a positive way, but still wears it
He uses its unique look to protect him and give him confidence when he is feeling vulnerable or insecure
He wears it as a way of isolating himself from strangers when he's around people he doesn't know
Phoebe, who he trusts most, is the only one who really understands him, and puts it on him as a way of showing it
