INSPECT YOUR PEAS BEFORE DROPPING THEM INTO THE NEXT PAN:

DIVERSE REACTIONS AND THE ABSURDISM OF "THE PLAGUE" BY ALBERT CAMUS

All 3 connect with either Pro- or Anti-Absurdism
BUT WHAT IS ABSURDISM?
1. DELIRIUM
“The people who had returned from quarantine were responsible for these fires [they set]. Thrown off their balance by bereavement and anxiety, they were burning their houses under the odd delusion that they were killing off the plague in the holocaust” (169).
“The years [of his age] had not dampened his cheerfulness. He couldn’t bear the sight of a watch… [so instead of using one,] every fifteen pans [of peas]—its feeding time. What could be simpler?” (117).
2. ESCAPE FROM REALITY
“In fact, with the heat and the plague...some of our fellow citizens were losing their head, and there had already been some scenes of violence and nightly attempts were made to elude the sentries and escape to the outside world” (105).
“They let themselves be swept towards resorts of pleasure whose companionable warmth seemed a safeguard from the plague’s cold breath. In public places, luxury and the lavish life… were now the quests of a whole populace” (197).
3. PROACTIVE PREVENTION
“If it (the anti-plague serum) failed, the doctor was convinced the whole town would be at the mercy of the epidemic”, embracing how vital the proactive intervention of plague by serum truly is (211).
