Transcript of Creator Unknown
"He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world."
The Light’s Reception
"He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but his own did not receive Him."
"...children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God."
John: the lamp
"There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe."
“All who have ever come to faith are indirectly dependent on [John the Baptist’s] opening proclamation of the identity and saving purpose of Jesus Messiah.”
"John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light."
“The center of disciples’ lives is always to be outside themselves, beyond themselves, to the Subject at hand.”
"A voice of one calling: 'In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.'"
"Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name."
“We are a bunch of nobodies trying to exalt Somebody.”
Theology & Scripture
"You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life."
"The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming--not the realities themselves."
"I was standing today in the dark toolshed. The sun was shining outside and through the crack at the top of the door there came a sunbeam. From where I stood that beam of light, with the specks of dust floating in it, was the most striking thing in the place. Everything else was almost pitch black. I was seeing the beam, not seeing things by it.
Then I moved, so that the beam fell on my eyes. Instantly the whole previous picture vanished. I saw no toolshed, and (above all) no beam. Instead I saw, framed in the irregular cranny at the top of the door, green leaves moving on the branches of a tree outside and beyond that, 90 odd million miles away, the sun. Looking along the beam and looking at the beam are very different experiences."
“God is the highest good of the reasonable creature. The enjoyment of him is our proper end; and is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Better than fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of any, or all earthly friends. These are but shadows; but the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean.”
"Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God."
“I know you’re thirsty,
The water is free,
But I must warn you,
It’ll cost everything.”
“True faith embraces Christ in whatever ways the Scriptures hold Him out to poor sinners.”
“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline.... Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
"Do not trust in deceptive words and say, 'This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD!' If you really change your ways and your actions…then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever. But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless. 'Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, 'We are safe'—safe to do all these detestable things? Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the LORD."
Jeremiah 7:4-5, 7-11
“Christians don’t tell lies,
they just go to church and sing them.”
"We are saved by faith alone,
but the faith that saves is never alone.”
