Stalingrad The Battle July 17, 1942- February 3, 1943 The Battle of Stalingrad started on July 17, 1942. The battle was over the city of Stalingrad in southwestern Russia. The Nazis and the Russians competed for the land. The Outcome The Battle of Stalingrad last for almost seven months. This was the first major defeat for the Nazis on land. The Casualties When the battle was over 400,000 Germans, 120,00 Hugarians, and 120,000 Italians were dead. 91,000 Axis soldiers were captured and 27,000 of those died within a week of cold and starvation. only 5,000 POWs returned home to Germany. The axis Powers losr 1.5 million troops in Stalingrad. The Axis Powers The ALlied Powers Almost 1,130,000 men were dead, mortally wounded, or missing. 750,000 civilians were killed in the fighting. 278 Soviet soldiers were exicuted for cowardice.
