Forma Urbis Chiang Mai Figureground/Nolli Map The Figureground map shows how the building style expanded during Chiang Mai's urban sprawl in the latter part of the 20th Century. The "Old City" as it is called was constrained inside the mote. As the population grew so did the city and the variation of building types. The urban footprint sprawled out in a radius limited by the mountains to the west and to an extent the Ping River which runs to the east of Chiang Mai. Slowly the villages surrounding the "old city" became a part of the greater Chiang Mai region.
