Ancient Greek Contributions to Modern Mathematics Done By: Adnan Moussa and Wahab Mandeel Introduction Back in Ancient Greece, about 2500 years ago. Geometry Today we will talk about the mathemathicians of Ancient Greece, which are Pythagoras and Euclid
Pythagoras Euclid Not much is known about this man. He was born on the island of Samos in the 6th century B.C.E. He is thought as the worlds' first philospher and many sources credit him for inventing the term "Philosophy" Pherekydes was known as the teacher of Pythagoras, and Thales and pupil Anaximander who bought live in Miletus. In the book "Life of Pythagoras" it says that he went to visit Thales some time from the age of 18 to 20. Thales taught him mathematics and astronomy while his pupil Anaximander taught him about geometry and cosmology.
In the year 535 BCE he went Egypt and studied with priests after ten years in 525 Egypt was invaded by Cambyses II king of Persia. He was taken prisoner in Babylon and went back to Samos in 520 BCE when Polycrates had been killed and Cambyses died in the summer of 522 BC. Outside his city, Samos he had a cave he would study Philosophy and research the uses of mathematics. In 518 BCE he left to Italy, there he founded a philosophical and religious school in Croton. His beliefs were... 1. That at its deepest level, reality is mathematical in nature, 2. That philosophy can be used for spiritual purification,
3. That the soul can rise to union with the divine, 4. That certain symbols have a mystical significance, and
5. That all brothers of the order should observe strict loyalty and secrecy. Many of the math he did with his students wasn't like unvirsety courses, but it was simple. They did stuff like 2 ships + 2 ships = 4 ships, but Pythagoras was interested in the principles of mathematics, the concept of number, the concept of a triangle or other mathematical figure and the abstract idea of a proof. Pythagoras believed that all relations could be reduced to number relations. The Pythagorean... having been brought up in the study of mathematics, thought that things are numbers... and that the whole cosmos is a scale and a number. Pythagoras had studied the properties of all kinds of numbers odd, even, triangular, perfect etc. Ten was the very best number according to Pythagoras it contained in itself the first four integers - one, two, three, and four [1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10] - and these written in dot notation formed a perfect triangle. Why he made his Theory, the Pythagorean Theorem: In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs. (c2 = a2 + b2) Euclid born in about 325 BCE, grew up to be a famous Greek mathematician. He taught at a school in Alexandria, Egypt. He is famous for his book... The Elements In his book "The Elements" which people has been using for about 2000 years he mostly talks about geometry in his teaching and other mathematicians in the interest of planes and solid geometry, proportions, and properties of numbers which we all use today, and some original theory’s. As you can see through out this presentation we did we included information about the two mathematicians' lives and what they did to influence modern day math. Just in case you didnt get them Euclid was a math teacher who wrote a book about geometry that has been used for over 2000 years and Pythagoras made his own theorems and taught geometry.
