The Irony in "The Possibility of Evil" and its Theme
Transcript of The Irony in "The Possibility of Evil" and its Theme
An example of dramatic irony in "The Possibility of Evil" is when Miss Strangeworth drops one of the letters that she wrote and she doesn't even realize it. The reader will know and can conclude that it's only a matter of time before Miss Strangeworth is caught.
An example of situational irony is when Miss Strangeworth believed that her letters would help on defeating or destroying the so called "evil" within the town when in actuality, she was just creating a greater evil within herself.
An example of verbal irony is when Shirley Jackson (the author) says that "She was pleased with the letter. She was fond of doing things exactly right..." Shirley Jackson is stating that Miss Strangeworth was trying to do right but in actuality, she was creating a much bigger chaos.
An example of irony in "The Possibility of Evil" is when Miss Strangeworth discovers that her roses had been destroyed. This is ironic simply because Miss Strangeworth was the one creating all the destruction and chaos in other people's lives by accusing them of evil and now the evil had turned around and returned back on her and destroyed the one thing that is mostly dear to her which is her rose garden.
The theme of "The Possibility of Evil" is that one shouldn't search for the evil and darkness within people.
A summarization of this powerpoint is that this story reaveals all the types of irony and it all relates to the theme.
