Reading Articles for homework
Group four symposium
Celebration of Learning Project Design Labs: Researching topics that we thought were interesting Reading articles for homework: Highlighting interesting topics Group Four Symposium: Experiment on something that we thought was interesting Celebration of Learning Project: Enjoyed researching our personal project topics Open-Minded How was this aim met in class? weighing the pros and cons
learning about other cultures
learning about personal histories Weighing the pros and cons: Stem cell research
some people do not like the idea of destroying embryonic eggs while others believe that stem cell research could benefit future medical breakthroughs
In vitro fertilization
some people do not think we should interfere with the natural uncertainties of reproduction while others see IVF as an opportunity to have children
GMOs (genetically modified organisms)
Higher crop yield, less insecticide, however, they are ethically controversial because they are not natural. Learning about other cultures: In vitro fertilization is more restricted in other countries such as Italy where as in China, it is embraced. Persona histories: We learned about diseases such as sickle cell anemia and cancer and we were sensitive towards people's situations Communicators How was this aim met in class? Randomly assigned lab partners
Group four symposium
Celebration of learning project Randomly assigned lab partners: Learned how to communicate with people we did not necessarily know before being partnered with them
Relied on them for dissections and lab write ups Group Four Symposium: Communicated our findings to our peers during the symposium
Communicated ideas to partners from other classes and through discussion boards Celebration of Learning project: Learned a new methood of communication
Learned how to make prezis
Learned how to orally communicate our findings to our peers Balanced How was this aim met in class? Learning about nutrition
Learning about muscles and joints
Balancing Biology with other classes and extracurricular activities Learning about Nutrition: Learning about how our food is digested made us more conscious about the food choices we make every day Learning about muscles and joints: Learning about how our body moves made us more aware of healthy exercising techniques to help us balance our physical health Balancing Biology with other classes/extracurricular activities: Learned how to use time management to make sure we had time to study for bio while still doing other projects and going to track practice, musical rehearsal, and marching band. Extension of Classroom activity Doing activities in class that promote curious thinking has helped Dominique in deciding to be a Sharpe Community Scholar at William and Mary. As a scholar, she will be conducting independent, community based research. This requires curiosity. Being an inquirer during the Celebration of Learning project has helped Madeleine think about activities that she will be involved in during college. Being curious about and looking into divestment has sparked her interest in the divestment campaign at William & Mary. By developing her natural curiosity for biology, Robin has decided to go to college to study Marine Science with a focus in Marine Biology. Her school even owns an island off the coast of Myrtle Beach where Marine Science students can do field research! Extension of Classroom Activity Weighing the pros and cons of GMOs made us grow in awareness about what we ate and as GMOs are not going away any time soon, this will aid our understanding of the world around us.
Learning about GMOs also helped us make a personal decision in regards to GMOs. NON-GMO GMO Extension of Classroom Activity Being a communicator will help Madeleine beyond the classroom because she wants to be an environmental lobbyist. She will have to apply her communication skills to talk to people who disagree with her and negotiate. Being a communicator will help Robin beyond the classroom not just with other people, but also with animals. She wants to become an animal trainer after she graduates from college and hopes to communicate her talents and the talents of sea mammals to appreciative audiences everywhere. Being a communicator will help Dominique beyond the classroom as she will need to communicate in her future career both in English and another language. Being a communicator will also be essential as she is currently planning on entering the foreign service, a career which requires tactful, diplomatic communication. Extension of Classroom Activity Being in IB Biology, we had to balance the class with our extracurricular activities.
Madeleine had track practice, Robin and Dominique had the Musical, and Robin had color guard. Madeleine and Dominique were also full IB students. In college, we will have to continue to balance work with play so we can be sure to do well in school and still maintain our well being. http://wheredmyjobgo.blogspot.com/2011/08/true-history-tuesday-beaker-invented.html http://www.fnal.gov/pub/today/universities/college-william-mary.html http://www.behance.net/gallery/Coastal-Carolina-University/2874785 http://www.123rf.com/photo_8049651_globe-icons.html http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/disorders/whataregd/sicklecell/ http://www.hangthebankers.com/eu-rejects-french-report-linking-gm-maize-to-cancer/ http://theshiksa.com/2012/05/25/grilled-vegetable-salad/ http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1731606,00.html http://www.imms.org/dolphin_program.php http://international.lsu.edu/apa/connect/travelwarnings.php
