How to Add,

Subtract, Divide,

and Multiply Integers! By: Brooke White Before you learn how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply integers I think you need to know what integers are!

Integers - all the whole numbers and all of their opposites on the number line, including zero. What Are Integers? Positive and Negative Numbers Positive number- A number(s)

greater than zero.

Negative numbers- A number(s)

less than zero. Adding Integers When you are adding a positive integer and a positive integer there is really nothing special, but add them up like you normally would.

When adding a negative integer with a negative integer its just like adding positive numbers but there is a - in front of the number.

When adding Negative AND positive integers you can get the answer by taking out the pairs.

If you don't understand

check out the examples 4 + 7 = 13

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +

-7 + -8 = -14

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

-9 + 4 = -5

- - - - - - - - -

+ + + +

(The pairs are removed) Examples: If you don't see a Positive or

Negative sign ( +or -) its a

positive number. P.S. A positive plus a positive ALWAYS equals a positive.

A negative plus a negative ALWAYS equals a negative.

a positive plus a negative can equal either one. Rules: When you are subtracting a negative integer with a negative integer you change the Minus sign to an addition sign. Then change the SECOND integer to the opposite sign (Change the minus sign to an addition sign, vise versa.)

When you are subtracting a positive integer with a positive integer you have to change the minus sign to a addition sign and the SECOND integer to the opposite sign.

When subtracting a negaive integer with a positive integer change the suntraction sign to an addition sign and the SECOND integer to the oppisite sign. Subtracting Integers If you dont under

stand look at Examples. -6 - -9 = ? -6 + 9 = 3

+ + +

7 - 4 =? 7 -3 = 4

+ + + + Examples: -5 - 7 = ? -5 + -7 = -13

- - - - - - - - - - - - - Rules: When subtracting a negative integer with a negative integer and the 2nd integer is greater than the first, the answer will be positive. Vise Versa.

When subtracting a positive integer with a positive integer and the 2nd number is greater, the answer will be negative.

When subtracting a positve intger with a negative integer and the 2nd integer is greater it will be a positive answer. I am sorry if these rules didn't make sense. I am not quite sure how to explain them! D:

I hope you understand. :) Sorry! Whenyou are multiplying a positive integer with a positive integer there is really nothing special! Just multiply like you normally would!

When you are multplying a negative integer with a negative integer just multiply! Like I said nothing special, its just a number with a - in front of it, Making it negative!

When you are multipling a positive integer with a negative integer just multiply! But take a look at the example and rules so you COMPLETLY understand how to multiply positve and negative integers. Multiplying Integers If you dont understand look at examples. 3 x 8 = 24

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

-3 x -5 = -15

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

-7 x 2 = -14

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - Examples: When you multiply a positive integer with a positve integer you will end up with a positive answer.

When you multiply a negative integer with a negative integer you will end up with a positve answer.

When you multiply a positive integer with a negative integer you will end up with a negative number. Rules: When dividing a positive integer with a positive integer just divide! You will always end up with a positive.

When dividing a negative integer with a negative integer you will end up with a positive number.

When dividing a positive and a negative number you will end up with a negative. Dividing Integers If you dont understand look at Examples. 35 / 7 = 5

+ + + + +

-45 / -5 = 9

+ + + + + + + + +

40 / -10 = -4

- - - - Examples: A positive number devided by a positive number will always end up as a positve answer.

A negative integer devided by a negative integer will always end up as a positive number.

A negative integer devided by a positive number will always end up as a Negative answer. Rules: Thats All! :D I hope you

enjoyed this Prezi! :)
