Energy Transfer Transfer of Heat CONDUCTION is the transfer of
heat THROUGH a material. Molecules
bumping into each other in a chain
reaction causes heat to travel
through an object. Metals are very good
conductors of heat:

copper
iron
aluminum
gold Non-metals are very
poor conductors. They
are called insulators:

rubber
plastic
air
glass CONVECTION is the transfer of
heat caused by the flow of matter
from one place to another. The
matter carries the energy. This
happens in gases and liquids as
they circulate. Uneven heating of air or
water causes it to circulate
and carry the heat.

Air in a room heated by a radiator RADIATION is the transfer
through space. Matter is not
involved in the transfer. Examples:
Light from the sun

moves through matter or space
and carries energy.

Waves transfer energy, not
matter. Wave Properties:
Crest is the highest point of a wave.
Trough is the lowest point of a wave.
Wavelength is the distance between one crest and the next.
Frequency is the number of waves that pass by in 1 second.
Amplitude is the height of the wave. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength. TRANSVERSE WAVES vibrate perpendicular to the direction of the motion of the wave. LONGITUDINAL WAVES vibrate in the same direction as the motion of the wave. Sound SOUND is produced by longitudinal waves traveling through air or other materials. Sound travels faster through solids and slower through gases, like the air. Properties of Sound:
Intensity - the loudness of a sound, determined by the amplitude
Pitch - how high or low, determined by the frequency Light Light is an ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE. These waves can travel through empty space or through some matter, like air or clear glass. Light always travels at the same speed through empty space: 300,000 km/sec. Light wavelengths are very short.

Purple light has the shortest wavelengths, red light the longest. Light is not the only kind of electromagnetic wave. Others include radio waves, infrared, and ultraviolet waves.

The SPECTRUM includes all the electromagnetic waves arranged according to wavelength. The rainbow is the visible spectrum produced when sunlight passes through water drops in a cloud. The colors are ROY G BIV:

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet Hearing:
Sound waves are picked up by the ear, causing the eardrum to vibrate. Vibrations are then transmitted to the cochlea which translates the vibrations into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. Vision:
The eye picks up light
reflected off objects with
its lens. The light is
focused on the retina at the
back of the eye where an
image is formed. The optic
nerve sends the image to
the brain as electrical
impulses.
