Transcript of The Invention Of Softball!

The invention of softball! The history of softball dates back to Thanksgiving day of 1887. Softball wasn't invented from a form of baseball. It was invented from a game of football. Fans sitting at the Chicago, Illinois Farragut boat club were waiting for the outcome of a football game against Harvard and Yale. When the result came out that Yale won, an excited Yale fan threw an old boxing glove at a Harvard fan. The fan hit the glove with a stick. An idea hit George Hancock's head as he saw this happen. He decided to tie the glove laces tight together to make a ball and use a broomstick as a bat. George used a white chalk stick to make an area at the boat club for playing this new indoor game like baseball. The first softball game played had a final score of 41-40! A man named Louis Rober, of Minneapolis, was the lieutenant of the fire department and wanted to have a game for his firemen, so he used softball. The game became very popular throughout other fire departments and they started playing each other. Rober's team was called the Kittens and the game was called Kitten ball until 1925 when it was renamed diamond ball by the Minneapolis Parks Board. In 1926 it was named to softball. Softball is played with 2 teams on a large field, with 10 players from one team on the field at a time while the other team is up to bat. Positions in softball:
