Hong Kong
Development of Nursing Informatics?
- established by Hong Kong nurses, and this organization has enjoyed a consistent increase in membership
Telemedicine and videoconferencing are in use
Multimedia enhancement in the clinical setting with voice recording and imaging now helps to speed up the works process and strengthens services
South Korea
Development of Nursing Informatics?
A Society was established in October 1989
it is called the
Sign of the Korea Society of Medical Informatics
, the premier organization in Korea dedicated to the development and application of medical and health informatics in the support of patient care, education, research and administration of healthcare arena in general
New Zealand
Development of Nursing Informatics?
Notable changes have occurred within New Zealand nursing legislation that impact the roles of future nurses
1. Nursing Council of New Zealand established the new role of nurse practitioner.

2. Legislation was passed permitting nurse prescribing.

Health Practitioners Competence Assurance (HPCA) Act (2003) was passed by the government
What is it?
the HPCA Act 2003 requires each health practitioner group to describe its profession in terms of scopes of practice
Development of Nursing Informatics?
This group continued to flourish and hosted to the Fourth International Science in Melbourne in 1991
A year later a small group of midwives in Victoria, including Joan Edgecumbe, who is now the executive officer of the
Health Informatics Society Australia's Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group
decided to call a general meeting of nurses interested in computer use. About
70 nurses
agreed to establish the Nursing Computer Group Victoria (NCGV)
Historical Milestones
Changes & Trends influencing nurses to embrace informatics

Nursing Informatics in Australia has begun with the Royal Australian Nursing Federation (now ANF) in 1984
This act came into force in 2004 and replaced the Nurses Act of 1977
The profits of this conference enabled the formation of the HISA
The changes in responsibility for healthcare provision in New Zealand have seen a more collaborative approach resulting in integrated care being seen as a priority. Integrated care is being supported by technology, enabling information to flow
Electronic health event summaries, laboratory and radiology data are now being transmitted between providers across primary and secondary sectors
The internet and Intranet are providing a wealth of information to health providers as well as consumers
The web environment and the use of powerful integration engines, is now providing contextual views of data that is browser-based and single logon. Placed over multiple hospital information systems this connection provides a “single patient view” of data across all medical applications that can be used by clinicians
Online technologies provide products and services that enhance patient care and improved clinical outcomes through evidenced-based health information and decision support systems
Education & Research
In New Zealand, NI has been recognized as a significant by the Ministries of Health and Education since the early 1990’s
Changes have taken place in undergraduate nursing education, including the computer literacy of entering students and the credentials with which new nurses qualify.
The impact of these changes on undergraduate nursing education has a flow-on effect within post-graduate education
Australia and New Zealand now have a number of Masters and PhD students who are conducting research in areas of health informatics. Two specific areas that are currently gaining more attention within NI are clinical pathways and evidenced-based practice.
Health informatics does not exist as a research category for the major government research funding organizations such as the Australian Research Council, or the national Health and Medical Research Council, which makes a difficult to obtain research funds from these organizations
It is anticipated that this will change in the near future as part of the Australian government’s health workforce capacity building initiative
