Transcript of Repacking Smartline
...SmartLandscape...a coastal information product...
...how to communicate not just describe this...
The Coast... it's a line!

We got smart!
Great descriptive information and easy data management
the format is problematic for analysis, comparison & management use.
What do we mean problematic?
Lots of attributes & categories
= complex segmentation of the coastline
Ever increasing segmentation
= smaller and smaller "pieces"
Difficult to get a "sense" of the coast
not easy to "profile" (compare) sections of the coast (coastal landscapes)
The information is great, however needs repackaging to make it useful for management
I want something that provides quantitative information in a way that aids management of the coast.
I want a quantitative profile of coastal landscapesfor analysis and comparative purposes.
Can I use Smartline to derive a summary that gives me the same sense as this picture?
That is, the coast as a landscape...
a single piece of coastline (125m) after segmentation
that's pretty small!
Segmentation creates alot of small complex components. Why? Each attribute of Smartline has multiple categories
Transform the geometry!
or is it?
(Landform profiles or distributions)
58% soft bedrock (>5m)
42% soft bedrock (>5m) with colluvum
The coast as a landscape
Re-packing SmartLine for coastal management
We can now easily answer questions like:
Where are all the coastal landscape were
the distal landform is
>50% soft bedrock cliff (>5m)?
...that's almost a management question!
We're got coastal landscapes we can profile!
