By Jack Bartholomew Effective Sports Leaders There are many roles to do with sport.... Roles An instructor is someone who develops through learning and leads through instruction. Instructor A sports leader will take the role of an instructor when leading a sports activity, they have to communicate through most methods of communication, such as Practical and Verbal It means an expert of the Mental Life. The more knowledge you have about your athletes desires and goals, the more you can set the, goals to set them develop. A sports leader needs to understand how minds work as well as bodies function. You must be aware of the personality of sports performers, what motivates them and how they interact with each other. Psychologist Sports leaders must be aware of the technical, physical and tactical demands of the sport. Trainer The trainer may have a bank to help develop the participants ability to perform at their optimum in competitive situations. Should be able to design and implement programs for the sports performers which reflect in the sport they compete. A trainer needs to consider
Experience You require motivation to keep interested at all times, this is when the motivator becomes useful. Motivator In order to understand how someone is motivated you must understand their personality. You can use rewards for each of the participants for the duration of the activity. A guardian is someone with the duty to care for and protect others. Guardian When a sports leader presents a lesson each participant must be catered for individually since everyone has different needs. Also they must care for each person and is responsible for their welfare for the duration of the lesson. As a leader you have to teach skills so the participant can develop in that sport. Teacher You may first teach certain techniques to beginners so they can improve their basic skills. Participants learn best when they're actively involved in sports sessions, rather then passive learning.
Recognize how, when and where new techniques or tactics could be used within the sport.
When they are encouraged to build on previous techniques and experiences, and learn how some skills can be transferred from sport-sport.
If they are motivated and enjoy what they are doing
Can also see how they are improving. When you're leading a sport you're representing the sport so you must set a good example. Role Model The more enthusiastic you appear to be, the more likely the participants are becoming enthusiastic too.
Meaning the performers would enjoy it more and want to continue participation. As a leader you need to be organized and prepared.
Organization starts prior to the delivery of the session. Organizer You should learn some vital information before you start the planning since there may be important. You should plan for any scenarios such as :
Bad Weather
Lack of equipment
Unavailability of the venue
Too many people attending the session There are many factors that can improve your leadership.... Psychological Factors When sports performers are put into groups they can affect each other, when a group is formed the leader needs to make sure there is a strong bond since there will be a large element of trust. Cohesion Also there has to be a strong sensed of shared goals and they are aware of everyone role within the team. It is the extent of how far the team works together towards common goals. Task Cohesion This type of cohesion leads to sporting performance. A sports leader will keep some information confidential such as :
A particular injury
A personal problems
Issues with other members of staff
Issues with other members of the session. Discretion If a child discloses something of a concern you should be aware of the procedures that follow. You must not take any abuse to heart and just show forgiveness to all. Forgiveness Some people will disagree with your decisions normally when you're an official. Never react inappropriately towards athletes or spectators. Leaders should always express the behavior they wish to receive. A leader must pay great attention to every last detail of a session. Attentive They must carry out the session appropriately following clear instructions and technical guidance. As a leader you must show due care and attention to each of the athletes you are training. Should demonstrate attentiveness when observing the application of each skill, technique or activity. If you spot any problems you can stop the performers and help them improve their skill. Some performers may require more attention then others, but you must not allow these people to feel inadequate. To ensure every performer develops, a leader must motivate, encourage and inspire. Empowerment If you engage everyone in a session then you will develop their ability to empower them. Leaders must demonstrate objectivity, judgement that is not affected by emotions and is disinterested, factual and based on observational skills. Objectivity Leaders exercise this characteristic in a number of scenarios including:
Mixed ability level of performers
Conflict inside the group
Leading sessions when people are from different religions and races. A sports leader should show objectivity in all lessons by being fair and equal to everyone. Never show favoritism. A sports leader should be patient in all sessions. Patience It is vital to have a calm persona at all times and never show anger. To help people develop by differentiate activities to appropriate individuals. As a leader you should not rush sessions, you may need to coach people of different abilities. It means determination. Persistence You need to be persistent when leading sessions to ensure the athlete keeps developing. It is the ability to put yourself in other people shoes. Empathy When you have empathy you can understand how they are feeling and there point of views. Knowledge of Sport Understanding the physical needs of participants Knowledge of rules and laws Understanding the mental needs of participants. Qualities You may require many qualities to become a good leader. A leader must demonstrate a high level of skills and knowledge to show the participants. Many sessions may include skill development of a specific skill or technique. The leaders knowledge should include the technique needed to improve that skill. To be respected in a session it is good to have equal if not better knowledge then the participants. If the participants have more knowledge then the players may become frustrated since they are being held back. Leaders need an awareness of the different physical needs of different clients. A leader may deliver sessions with similar aims but different activities. Inclusivity is an important quality of a sports leader. A leader needs to demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the laws and rules of the sport. They must be a role model to the athletes in their session. Passing on knowledge of the rules and regulations to make sure they play fairly. Participating in sport is as much as developing the mind as the body. Participating in activities can help raise your mood and mental health.
