Transcript of Aquaponics
How it aquaponics works-In a natural pond, fish consume food and excrete waste. Bacteria convert the toxic ammonia in fish waste into nitrate; a nutrient for plants.
The raw organic matter in the fish feces and old plants are transformed by microbes, insects and earthworms into humus; the heart of living soil. Humus is the best fertilizer there is for organic vegetables.
The best plant species to use- Leafy greens and herbs.
Types of planting media to use-Hydroton
A type of clay pellet that expands when wet, hydroton forms a dense soil-like layer that roots can easily grow into. Additionally, the pebbles are particularly smooth, making them easy on sensitive roots. It is also pH neutral, meaning that no acid will build up in your water supply, thus adversely affecting plant growth. It will also drain freely, aiding in the oxygenation of roots.
Best fish species for aquaponics-The species of fish that you would use and the reason that you chose it.- I would use a bass or bluegill because they are easy to care for and don’t need much maintenance.
The species of plants that you would use and the reason that you chose it.-I would use some type of herb or vegetable because then I could eat it.
Temperature requirements-Maintain it from 70-76 degrees F. Pump (water volume that they would move)-I would just use a normal water pump that would pump water through the whole system.
