Family Literacy Night!
WELCOME
Questions to ask throughout the night!
What does literacy mean for me and my children?
(We hope to answer this question tonight through our activities and resources!)
How can I encourage my child to engage in literature/reading everyday?
(We have ideas for you and resources for you to take home!)
What is the school doing to help my child like to read and to read BETTER?
(We have teachers from each grade level available throughout the evening for you to talk to!)
Why is it so important that I am here?
(Stay around for the rest of this presentation; we want to explain how important you are to your child becoming a lifelong reader!)
Read to your child everyday!
Tips for making reading
FUN at home!
Read books or tell stories that you loved as a child.

Read stories in your native language.

Use games that we play tonight at home with your child and create your own word games.

During the family's ride home from school, work or grocery store, etc., the family can take turns spelling and pronouncing the words on billboards, traffic signs, license plates, advertisement, etc. This game will increase the literacy skills of the child, in addition to maintaining a fun ride home.
Learn about a new topic together!
Volunteer at school!
Help out in the classroom.

Share about your culture/special holidays, are you an expert about something (your job, sewing, cooking, gardening, another hobby) COME IN and share it with the students.

Join the PTA (Parent-Teacher Association)!!
Communication between parents and teacher are important - you know your child best, you were their first teacher.
Our school's beliefs about
your child's literacy and YOU!
Parents are the experts for their children. The skills a child is taught at home are the foundation for learning.
Understanding the importance of learning does not stop at the end of the school day. Family time spent on homework and reading is invaluable.
The school needs to instill a sense of belonging with parents and children. Parents need to be invested in their child’s learning experience.
Please ENJOY each of the stations we have prepared for you!!
Station #1
Parents and students are asked to read aloud 1 book TOGETHER! The readings will be done between 7-8pm, but this station is open all evening with our Librarian available to help everyone choose just the right book!!
READ ALOUDS:
If you love the book, check it out for the week! If you did not, you are encouraged to put in the "thumbs down" pile and share with a staff member what element of the book you didn't enjoy.
Station #2
During the first half of the evening, each family member will receive an index card at the table. On this card, you will write a note to any family member in attendance. This note should describe a favorite memory that is directly tied to the recipient. The memory can be told using prompts like “I will never forget the day you…” and “I am so glad that we…”
TWO WAY NOTES
Halfway through the evening, the notes will be delivered. It is then the recipient’s job to write a response to this memory on the back of each card, using similar prompts.
Station #3
Families cluster into larger teams within the designated area. One person with a smartphone must volunteer to be the photographer. The other team members wait in the room for 5 minutes while the “photographer” steps outside the room to photograph something interesting within the school. Mystery and creativity are encouraged. Themes range from an open classroom door...perhaps a trash can on its side...or to something as small as a candy wrapper left in the hallway. The photographers each return to their team to share the mystery picture. Each team member writes a one paragraph story about that photo —what it means, where it came from or how it happened. Team members each share their own theory aloud.
WHAT'S YOUR STORY
Dramatic delivery is encouraged!
Station #4
Students and family members will select a book to read together. After they read the book, they'll be given a journal in which they can write, doodle or add decoration as a method of reader response. Magazines, scissors, markers and tape will be available for families to express their creativity. Prompts for journal entries will include, "How did this book make you feel?" "Suppose you get to re-name the main character: what do you think his/her name should be?" or "Clip out a photo or illustration from a magazine that matches the tone of your book."
JOURNAL IT!
We encourage you to continue using the journals at home!
Visit the local library to check out informational books that cover your preferred topic.
