Lake okeechobee is in danger - The water is being polluted with
cyanobacteria and phosphorus. Phosphorous fuels the production of cyanobacteria, which includes blue green algae. The cyanobacteria produces cyanotoxins, which are deadly to the fish and wildlife in and around lake
Okeechobee. Why should i care? - Lake Okeechobee is the second largest
freshwater lake completely in the United States - it provides provides drinking water for nearby towns and even
backup water for south eastern Florida's six million residents - Lake Okeechobee is also home to a 28.4 million dollar industry of bass and and speckled perch fisheries What is the problem? What is causing the problem? How can the problem be fixed? What can i do? - Local farmers of crops are using fertilizers with phosphorous.
Dairy farmers also use feed with phosphorous, and the cow manure
therefore has phosphorous in it. When it rains, the phosphorous
gets washed away into Lake Okeechobee. 1. Phosphorous should be replaced inside
plant fertilizers and cow feed. 2. Regulations for better management practices
(BMPs) should become stricter, and new
regulations should be added. - An alternative option is the construction of water
management facilities to improve water quality,
and overall reduce phosphorous levels. 1. Raise awareness. - Another alternative is silvopasture, process that involves the combination of livestock operations with trees and forage
2. Do not contribute! - On top of it all, the cyanobacteria also block sunlight that is necessary for submerged vegetation. When the algae dies, it further kills fish by removing oxygen from the water column and filling it with waste product, including ammonia.
