Strawberries By: Nevena Vucetic What does genetically modified mean? When a specific gene with a certain, desired trait is transferred directly from one organism (plant, animal, or bacterium) into another.

Genes that are inserted into new organisms use chemical messages to instruct the cell to perform its functions by making proteins or enzymes. By introducing a foreign gene, scientists get the altered cell to make new proteins or enzymes so that the cell will perform new functions. Generally, plasmids (small, circular, double stranded DNA molecules) can be modified with restriction enzymes to “take in” a new gene. This plasmid can then be sent into the desired cell and once replication occurs, the cell will begin to perform new functions that the inserted gene carried.
What are they doing to Strawberries? Strawberries are being sprayed with pesticides a total of 6 times during and after their growing process.

They often undergo fumigation (injection of gas/liquid into the soil) with highly toxic chemicals.

All parts of the strawberries are covered: undersides of leaves, and all surfaces of the berry.

Some strawberries are sprayed with genetically modified “ice minus” which is a bacteria that protects them from frost.

Some strawberries have the gene that helps coldwater fish survive low temperatures inserted into them in order to make them frost resistant. How have they impacted the world? Genetically modified strawberries have impacted the world in several positive and negative ways. They have changed the way that people look at eating strawberries. Some people are repulsed by the idea of eating G.M. strawberries while some believe that they are healthier than the wild varieties. Here are some positive and negative facts of how these strawberries have affected/impacted the world: Positive: Strawberries look amazing(red, plump).
Strawberry plants are more productive(produce more and faster).
Strawberries are a lot bigger(fill a box faster).
Strawberries are much more resistant to pests and immune to chemicals.
More rigourous testing goes into G.M. foods. Therefore we are assured the strawberries are good to eat.
G.M. strawberries can survive and produce products in various environmental conditions.
The strawberries have a better overall quality(flavor, nutritional value).
Negative: Since strawberries have such a soft outer skin, pesticides and other chemicals can very easily enter the "body" of the strawberry; leaving residue.
Consumers ingest any leftover residue from the strawberries. These chemicals may harm the body; Endagering the health of consumers.
Could bring an end to organic agriculture- from which many people make a living.
Limits peoples ability/right to eat non-contaminated foods.
Proven to be environmentally unsafe.
Strawberries Ethics Should genetically modified foods be labelled? There is no way for the public to know when a food is genetically modified. The Canadian and American governments do not require G.M. foods to be labeled. This for many people is not a problem but for others, it is. With lots of new research looking into the harmful affects of genetically modified foods, many people are turning away from genetically modified foods. Since G.M. foods do not need to be labelled, it is virtually impossible to walk into a grocery store and not buy a genetically modified food. What can you do? Unless the Canadian and American governments suddenly decided to reinforce that G.M. foods be labelled, there are several things people can do: Start shopping at fresh food markets where organic farmers sell their products- they spray minimal if any pesticides and will ensure safe foods.
Grow your own fruits and vegetables; this way you can ensure yourself that your foods are not modified. Genetic Engineering: Agricultural and Food Scientist
A genetic engineer can work in a number of different fields including the genetic modification of crops. These engineers look at ways to improve certain crops by seeing which foreign types of DNA can be added to improve the crop. This job can be very interesting for those interested in creating healthier and tastier foods.

In order to become a genetic engineer and to specifically genetically modify crops, one must first become a genetic engineer in university. This can be achieved through either a graduate or an undergraduate level at many universities around the world. A Masters degree or PhD is then required to become a scientist in this field.
Careers There are many possible careers in the field of biotechnology. There is one career that speciically deals with the genetic modification of foods: The End Summary:
Strawberries are genetically modified to withstand cold temperatures that will kill the plant if it is not modified. Strawberries also undergo massive amounts of pesticide sprayings in their lifetime in an attempt to create a better product.
