World Politics Lecture 21
Global Wealth Disparity
Since the end of World War II the world has seen unprecedented levels of economic growth fueled in part by international development programs
However the disparity between the rich and the poor has widened considerably
Both within countries
And across the global economy as a whole
Wealth versus prosperity?

Poverty Today
Poverty defines the global landscape
Approximately half the world’s population lives on less than $2/day
The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income
22,000 children die each day due to poverty
Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight
1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation
2 billion people are food insecure
For every $1 in aid a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment
Poverty disproportionately impacts women and children
