Dear Jay,
I've discovered that there is no better way to lead but by example. Not preaching, or talking, but acting. When someone looks around you - your actions with Rotary, your involvement with Water Missions, your bigger-than-life smile and way to the world - one can see lots of good examples. No good deed shall ever be forgotten, and I'm pretty sure you realized that by know: representatives of the whole world will gladly confirm this. Those are the lives you touched and they couldn't be the same after that. Thank you, and may God bless you.

Mine is one of the many lives that changed due to Jay Cook’s dedication to the Rotary Youth Exchange program. After a year as an exchange student, I was given the opportunity to attend university in the U.S.A. Last year I received my Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and I will be soon starting my post doctoral position at the National Institute of Health.

Jay,
BE STRONG and HAVE FUN!!
About nine years ago I was just arriving in USA saying a few of english words, enough to keep me not hungry. A year after, everything changed. This program is part of our lives forever, and you work very hard to keep it alive I know that, of course you never work alone, your friends are there to support you anytime, and, also we are here around the world to give our support. For now I would like to thank you to change my life and say BE STRONG and HAVE FUN!!
Big Hug

Jay,

I remember meeting you in 2006 on the lake for an outbound meeting the summer before I left for Ecuador. I remember thinking to myself "That man probably rides a Harley with that mustache and crossed arm stance." Never would I have guessed that you were the man with the biggest heart in the room. I haven't seen you in years, but I'll always remember how you would give us the biggest hugs and make everything a big joke. Stay strong and positive because you're going to make it through this and come out even stronger. I'm sure that you and your family have a lot of islands left to visit on the sailboat to check off of the bucket list!!!

A huge hug,

Jay, Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for creating an oppportunity that entirely changed the trajectory of my life as a young girl in a small town in SC. Since my exchange year, I have traveled the world making a difference in the lives of others just like you made a difference in my life and the lives of thousands of other kids around the world. Now I am Chair of the International Committee in the Rotary Club of Toronto and mentor and support our exchange students just like you cared for us. Sending you a world of love and healing.

Jay made my exchange year an unforgettable year, every word of encouragement helped me become who I am today, thank him and his beautiful family that adopted me as part of them, they made me feel at home and remember the love and the simplest gesture made you feel loved.

Thanks Jay for all your love and moments of laughter that never forget.

Jay, thank you very much for all your effort in making this programme available to the young kids. I was one of those who as a teenager arrived to South Carolina more than 15 years ago. It was before we had Internet, Skype, Facebook, etc and it was a real disconnection from your family, friends and what it's call "your confort zone".

You welcomed me and the other kids to this year of personal experience. You told us a lot of rules and don'ts :-) but you also said that we should make the most of our time during that year. I think I did, but as years have passed, I wish I have the chance to live again that year. Feel again the warm welcome hug of the host family, sit down again in you first History class, play basketball in the court, attend the prom, meet the other exchange guys in Myrtle Beach, plan the great escape to go to the beach with other guys without letting you know :-), etc.

Just wanted to let you know also, that after 17 years I still keep in touch with some of the guys/girls that I met. I still feel close to all that I did and to the people. I still say proudly: "yes, I was in a little town in South Carolina attending to a high school for a whole year with a great host family and defining what I wanted to be as an adult".

All your dedication has made all these things possible, so really hope that you feel as proud of the outcome as I feel thanked to you.

Wish you the best!

Dear Jay.
I remember that day I met you, it was at first orientation.
I could not speak English at that time, I could not understand what everybody said and it made me so nervous. But I could understand that Jay is so kind and nice person. You led us to have great exchange year.
I am so lucky girl to have known you, Jay!
I love and miss you so much!
Take care and god bless you!

I remember meeting Jay Cook in two occasions. The first one, back in 2007 when he took me and some other students sailing. The second was in 2013, when I came back to visit the Charleston I've learnt to love thanks to Rotary Youth Exchange Program: I did some voluntary work for Water Missions and, of course, Jay was there. In those two very brief but intense moments I could capture Jay's essence. While a sedentary me in 2007 was fighting not to be hit by the sails of the boat (no success in that effort), I saw a man that knew how to enjoy the good, simpler things of life: he would look to the sea and smile. In fact, I don't remember Jay in any other way but smiling (maybe thanks to Vicki Tatum, her dentist and my great host mother? Doesn't matter). While in Water Missions, I (tried to) assemble some pieces to help people around the world get some clean water. And there was Jay, always eager to help, to explain, to be friendly.
I appreciate a lot the work you all do in your spare time for the exchange students. The opportunities that your work gives us is unforgettable, even after more than 20 years. Meeting people al over the world, laughing and having fun together, and all this the first time being away from home for so long, it's just great, thank you so much.

Much love, Helen Brotschi

While living in Sumter in the late 90's, we hosted a beautiful and wonderful Brazilian student named Daniela Polizelli, a 15-year-old who is a successful physician in her home country today.
When Daniela's parents came to visit her that spring, as so many parents of the inbound students do, they headed out to Charleston to enjoy one of South Carolina's premiere destinations.

Jay was the Rotary Youth Exchange Chairman for our district at the time, plus he was a deacon at his church, and of course he was operating two growing moving companies. Still, when he heard we were coming he made time in his schedule to show the Polizellis around the town, including having lunch with us.

Since I was on the District YE Committee, I saw Jay fairly regularly in those days, and he was probably the busiest guy I knew. Eventually I realized he was a miraculous user of every second of every day.

That was long ago and by now this wonderful man must have shared his warm, personal, & charismatic touch with literally thousands of people like the Polizellis and the Motts.

God blessed us when we met you, Jay! Thank you for lighting the way for us and so many others.

My name is Maria Carola Fenucci. I met Jay in 1990. His Family was hosting an exhange student from Belgium named Stephanie. They kindly invited me to travel along with them to Florida to visit Disney World and Sea World. I cherish the memories of that trip.
I was ecchange student to Bueafrt from Mar del Plata, Argentina 1989-1990.
In the pictures the blond girl is Stephanie and I am the brunette with the YEP Sweatshirt. I think this picture of Jay with Mickey Mouse ears will be fun to exhibit!!

It has pretty much been exactly 10 years now that we gathered at Jays house to leave the next morning, heading west to participate in the big trip with Bill McMurray. It was simply astonishing how Jay hosted about 15 of us from all over the world at his house for the night, having a lot of fun, telling stories and taking care that everybody had a great time. I remember him caring as a father even though all of us basically were strangers to him. He is a role model of promoting and encouraging young people and sure has a big heart. I wish him all the best and thank him a lot for his dedication to give foreign exchange students the best time they could have. Rock on Jay!

Philipp Kindt, 2004/2005 Chapin, SC

Dear Jay Cook,
Rotary made my dream of being a foreign exchange student come true. I was in Hilton Head Island in 2010/2011. I met a lot of amazing people as I had the chance to meet you during the sailing trip. I had a great time during the sailing trip and I owe it all to you and Rotary. I want you to know that I will be supporting you from Argentina during this difficult time for you. I pray for you everynight. Stay strong.
Love,

My dear Jay!!! How are you? I imagine very happy and surprised at the same time, with all these beautiful surprises that Rotary has been prepared to honor all your effort!! Yes! for you ... that more than you deserve!! For everything you've done for years and years, for thousands of crazy kids who decide to live this beautiful experience, and you were one of those responsible than my experience was so beautiful, cheerful, and full of love!!
Thank you for all the love you gave at the moment, for letting me stay in your home, spoil us, and above all, to be in every moment we need you, either, a hug, a paternal word, a friend!!!

Thank you for so many memories!!
I love Jay!!!!
