We need to extend instruction of words beyond the brief explanation in the context of a story. (Juel & Deffes 2004) Furthermore, explicit instruction must be provided for students who have limited background knowledge or linguistic barriers. We must do all we can as educators to prepare students for the 21st century and combat "word poverty". (Juel & Deffes 2004) "...students became word conscious and were anxious to add words to their lexicons." (Lane et al., 2010, p.366) When we explicitly teach Tier 2 words we are promoting "word consciousness" and encouraging a yearning more knowledge. "Selecting words for instruction that are more sophisticated labels for familiar concepts expands both vocabulary breadth and depth." (Lane et al., 2010, p.365) 1~Choose a familiar story from your grade level (or K-2) reading series. An example is "This is the Way We Go to School" from the Scott Foresman Reading Street series for Kindergarten. 2~ Identify 3-5 words that you feel are Tier 2 and would be appropriate for vocabulary instruction. 3~ Compare your Tier 2 words with the vocabulary words already selected by the basal to teach. Examples of the vocabulary chosen for "This is the Way We Go to School" included vaporetto, trolley, skis, etc. Are they similar? Are they different? Why? Which words are most appropriate for Tier 2 instruction? Discuss your findings and rationale in your table groups. Importance & Utility

Fourth, give examples of the word when used in other contexts different from the story. Fifth, have students interact with examples of or create their own examples of the word in a familiar context.
