A phrase, clause, or even sentence which leads into a quotation
Heading, header, and title

Generally include the speaker/authors name and the reason for using him or her as an excerpt in this context
It may also help establish the context for the quotation
Signal Phrase Examples

asserts
the late Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater.
With Known Author: For print provide signal phrase and page number.
Due to author's name being used in signal phrase, no need to put it into the parenthetical citation.
With Unknown Author: Use shortened title of work.
Use quotation marks an article title.
Italicize if it is a plays, books, television shows, and entire websites.
Provide page number
