Injuries to muscles
Sprain=stretch or tear to ligaments
Strain= stretch or tear to muscles
Grade 1 - stretching or slight tearing
Grade II - incomplete tear
Grade III - Complete tear
Grade 1 treatment Grade II Treatment
- Rest (24-48 hr. )
- Ice ( 10 min. on, 20-30 min. off. do not apply directly to skin)
- Compression (compression sleeves or a wrap)
- Elevation (elevate above heart level)
The same as Grade I treatment but may require immobilization
Grade III Treatment
Require immobilization and possibly surgery
This step is usually small exercises or physical therapy to help restore the person to full activity. They usually include exercises to prevent stiffness, improve range of motion and flexibility, etc.
Return to Activity
Usually takes anywhere from 2-3 months but may take longer depending on the location and severity of the injury. Some take as long as 8-12 months
Risks of returning to activity too soon
If you do too much activity too soon, you can re-injure the area causing greater injury and longer rehabilitation time.
Risks of not returning to activity soon enough
Scar tissue can form if you stay immobile to long that can lead to impaired mobility

Restrictions to returning to activity:
Your doctor will let you do
some walking and straightening
and bending of your knee at an
early stage in returning to activity.
They may recommend/require that you
wear a knee brace for extra support so to not
make the injury worse instead of
Muscles & Tendons:
Patellar Tendon (complete tear)-
When recovery is complete, you should not have any restrictions after a patellar tendon injury. Stiffness may be present post-recovery. When you first start to do any type of weight bearing, it will be slowly and most likely with crutches (toe-touch bearing).
Injury and Re-injury: ACL tear
Often when the ACL tears, some
common things to be injured along with it are the menisci and the MCL. If the injury isn't treated right away, these things can be injured later on.
For teens: Within the first 12 months after reconstruction, the chance that you will re injure your ACL in 15 times greater than another who is without the previous injury.
For up to two years after your injury,
as a teen you're susceptible to acquiring
a second ACL injury....
in the same or opposite knee.
