CAS: At the heart of the IB Diploma Program
Helping students develop into "active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."
Purpose: strengthen and extend peronal and interpersonal learning
Bridge the gap between formal schooling and the world outside of school
Balance
Connect with community
Personal reflection:
Increase awareness of and hone personal strengths
Increase awareness of and develop areas for improvement
CORE REQUIREMENTS
Real, purposeful experiences
Ongoing commitments; sustainability
3-4 hours per week

Challenging yourself
Taking initiative
Making connections outside of PHS

General Guidelines
Must relate to 1 of the 3 strands (C, A, S)
Must be based on a personal interest, skill, talent or opportunity for growth
Involves planning and forethought
Provides opportunity to develop a learner profile trait
Plan and initiate (at least one activity)
Record/log all hours
Should have a supervisor other than your parent/guardian
Save alternative forms of documentation
CAS-Viable Activities
Student Organizations & Clubs
Sports
Extra-curricular activities
Work with non-profits
Non-IB classes (C, A, and/or S)

NON CAS-Viable Activities
Simple, tedious, and/or repetitive work where you are not connecting with others
Passive experiences
Services rendered for family, relatives
Religious devotion and proselytizing
Work experience that only benefits you
Study groups
Fundraising without a clear, pre-defined, thoughtful purpose
Experiences which negatively affect others or cause/worsen social divisions
Experiences with no leader or responsible adult
Experiences that overlap with DP classes
