Quotes for Mr. Vanderveen
Quotes
“Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you.”
This quote explains how Mia is feeling about her control that she has over her choice in the novel. She is contemplating her choice that she is going to have to make whether to live or die.

“I realize now that dying is easy. Living is hard."
Mia is telling the reader that if she decides to live it will be hard for her. She would be living alone without her little brother, Teddy, and her parents.

"I have a feeling that once you live through something like this, you become a little bit invincible.”
When Mia's grandma says this quote she is explaining to Mia while she's in her coma, that after going through this situation she will become stronger as a person.

“Life might take you down different roads. But each of you gets to decide which one to take.”
This quote is explaining to the reader that sometime in your life your going to have two choices and you might get to choice what your going to take or the road itself might determind your path.

"I think that funerals are a lot like death itself. You can have your wishes, your plans, but at the end of the day, it's out of your control."
This quote is explaining that your life sometimes is out of your control just like how Mia's was when she got into the car crash killing her family. Her life iss out of her control.

If I Stay

Why These Quotes?
These quotes relate to some of the themes of the novel. I think that one of the themes of the novel is about making choices. Another theme is "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Each of these quotes are powerful in the way that they make the reader think about the difficult choice that Mia had to make. For example, when Mia says "I realize now that dying is easy. Living is hard." she is telling the reader that if she decides to live it'll be hard for her. She will have to live without her brother and parents in her life. She feels that it might be easier to die, so that she won't have to live with so much pain and grief and sadness. When her grandma says "I have a feeling that once you go through something like this, you become a little bit invincible," she is telling Mia that going through this traumatic experience will make Mia a stronger person. If she chooses life, she will become stronger, and be able to handle the hard times. The quotes “Sometimes you make choices in life, and sometimes choices make you.” “Life might take you down different roads. But each of you gets to decide which one to take.” and “If I stay. If I live. It's up to me,” all describe making choices in life. The main decision Mia has to make is whether or not she wants to live or die. The book also contains other typical teenage choices like what to do after high school, relationships, and family.
Relating To Theme
I picked these quotes specifically from the book because they made me think deeply about Mia's thinking and reasoning while she was trying to decide what to if she should choice life or death. These quotes made me think about my own life choices, and I've realized that each choice affects my future in so many ways.
1.
Go to Julliard School in New York City - This is the best school for music and fine arts in the country. Mia is considering turning it down so that she can stay with her boyfriend in Oregon.
2.
Perform with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Mia considers this the highest level of accomplishment for someone like her that plays the cello.
3.
Meet Yo Yo Ma. He is her favorite cellist, and idol.
4.
Compose a piece of music about her life. This will allow Mia to express what she has been through, and share it with other.
5.
Pay it forward to Willow. Send Willow on a week vacation to a spa in Colorado. Willow was a family friend and doctor who spent a lot of time in the hospital helping Mia and her family. She tried to save Teddy, but couldn't. It also says that Willow is sleep deprived, and it would be nice to give her a trip to say thank you for all that she did for her family.
6.
Have children and name one "Teddy." Mia wants to name a child Teddy after her deceased brother to keep his memory alive.
7.
Go on tour with Adam's band. Mia loves her boyfriend and wants to spend more time with him, but also to truly understand the passion he has for music that is very different from Mia's.
8.
Travel to Paris. This is the birth place of Yo Yo Ma, and Mia would like to experience life outside of Oregon.
9.
Forgive the driver of the pick-up truck that hit Mia's family in the car crash. She needs to forgive him because she needs to move on with her life and not live with anger.
10.
Memorize the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Mia wants to remind herself that the choices she has made in her life were hers, and that if she chose differently, it would have been different.
My Bucket List
1.
Go to college at University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) because it is a good school and I would love to live in California.
2.
Become a doctor because that is the career I want to pursue when I'm older.
3.
Make the Varsity softball team in high school because that is the main sport that I play and I love.
4.
Hit a grand slam because the first over the fence home run I got, there were only 2 runners on base.
5.
Get recruited by University of Illinois because if I was going to play softball anywhere that's where I want to play.
6.
Help/donate to people with cancer because a lot of people close to me have had cancer, and I know how hard it is to go through.
7.
Travel to Europe because I want to visit my cousin in England, and travel outside of the US. I also want to see all of the places that I am learning about in World History.
8.
Go to Hawaii because I've always wanted to go there, and it seems like a tropical paradise.
9.
Go skydiving because I'm not afraid of heights, and it seems like it would be really fun.
10.
Learn to speak Spanish fluently because I would love to be able to go to another country and communicate with the people in their language.
“Love, it never dies. It never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it. Love can make you immortal.”
Explanation- When Mia says this she means that once you have felt love, nothing can kill it. She believes that love can live forever.

“If you stay, I’ll do whatever you want. I’ll quit the band; go with you to New York. But if you need me to go away, I’ll do that too. .. And that would suck, but I’ll do it. I can lose you like that, if I don’t lose you today. I’ll let you go. If you stay.”
Explanation-When Adam is pleading this to Mia he is begging her to stay with him on Earth. He would do anything for her to keep her with him.

“I remember watching it all and getting the tickling in my chest and thinking to myself: This is what happiness feels like.”
Explanaion-When Mia says this in her mind she is thinking back to the time she spent with Adam and how happy he made/makes he feel.

"You might think the doctors or nurses or all this equipment is running the show," she says, gesturing to the wall of medical equipment. "Nuh-uh. She's running the show. Maybe she's just biding her time. So you talk to her. You tell her to take all the time she needs, but to come on back. You're waiting for her.”
Explanation-When Mia's nurse is explaining this process to Mia's grandpa she is telling him about how this is all up to Mia if she's going to live or die. She is the one that is choosing her future.

"Life is one thing and then in an instant it becomes something else."
Explanation-When Mia is thinking this to herself she is talking about how at one minute her family and her are taking a car drive to getting in a car crash where her whole family is dead an she is left to decide if she wants to live and stay on Earth or die with her parents and leave Adam and he grandparents.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/09/health/belgium-near-death-experiences/index.html

This article summarizes current research about patient accounts of near death experiences, similar to what Mia had in the book, If I Stay. Near death experiences occur when patients are medically very close to death. The researchers found that patients memories of what occurred while they were in a coma were actually more vivid, and contained more details than their memories of events that occurred in their life (i.e. their wedding). They also found that all people with near death experiences report similar things, like bright lights, out of body experiences and dark tunnels. In the book Mia has an out of body experience where she is able to watch herself and the reactions of the people around her. After reading this article, I realized that although this book is fiction, things like this really do happen. It also made me think about what I would do if this happened to me.
