Our Atmosphere vs. 5
Our Destination vs. 6
Our Affections vs. 7-8
“19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
Two Pressing Questions
Why doesn't Paul contrast the affections of the saved man with those of the lost man?
Why would Paul in the midst of talking about sanctification remind us of the depravity of the lost man?
Struggling Believer or Lost Man?
vs. 8 Those in the flesh cannot please God
vs. 9 One has the Spirit and one does not
vs. 10-11 The difference between flesh here and the body
Why Depravity Now?
Because it makes the Spirit the focus of our hope. Because it makes the Spirit the source of our sanctification and not us or the law.
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
“22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Why no Comparison of Affections?
Because our affections and a deepening love for the righteous requirement of the Law, to love God and others, flow naturally and obviously out of our realization of what the Holy Spirit is doing in us.
